i don't know what it is, but it sound like he is either coughing or choking...he can't have kennel cough because he hasn't seen another dog for a while...except for one dog while on a walk...he's been 'coughing' for about14 hours now, not straight, but every once in a while, could some one help me please??? i love him so much and i don't know what to do! i don't know if i have enough money to take him to a vet right now...
PS, do you think it could be a hairball? because he has allergies, he lick a lot, and maybe that's what im thinking
Dogs can pick up several things on walks; they don't always have to come in contact with another dog. Walking through areas where other dogs have been is enough. Is he up to date on shots?
I would take him into the vet and have it checked out.
Our rescue has been seeing a lot of Kennel cough lately. There are some 40 plus strains of Kennel Cough and the vaccination provides protection against approximately 10-14.
This is a very good explination:

Although there is a vaccine (Bordatella) for Kennel Cough, it is often not effective in preventing infection. The most likely explanation for this is that there are many strains and mutations of the virus out there. Therefore, it is hit or miss whether the vaccine used on your dog will be the right one for the strain with which your dog comes into contact. This is similar to the "flu shot" for people; each year a vaccine is developed based on which strain(s) are suspected to be most prevalent. Be aware that your dog can still catch Kennel Cough even if s/he has had a shot to prevent it.
I had a dog that developed tonsillitis. She coughed off and on all day like she was trying to hack up something. I went to the vet b/c I thought something was stuck, like a twig or something. She was on antibiotics for a while and it cleared up.
My Moms beagle does that all the time. She has had her to different vets a number of times...they never find anything wrong with her.
