I'm on a few local "freecycle" type of lists, and nearly every day there is someone giving their dog away because they're moving. Some are only moving across town, and when they get to their new place they run a "dog wanted" ad. They just don't want the hassle of moving the dog they already have. I see this so often. I can't imagine moving anywhere without my dog. I hope to be moving across country from TN to AZ, and the first thing I'm looking at in rentals is whether or not they take dogs. I know it's going to be hard to find a rental that will allow a large dog, but I won't go without him.

That's another thing that bugs me, the discrimination against large dogs. I love dogs of all sizes, but I have worked with dogs for years, and I've seen way more damage done by little dogs than large dogs, and a lot more "accidents" on the carpet from little dogs. I wish landlords would get educated in the fact that it's not the size or breed that matters, it's how the dog is raised and trained, whether it's a small dog or a large dog.

I was talking with someone at the Petsmart [adoption day] who said that someone turned in a dog because they changed their carpets and the dog did not match.

We have lived in rental places I would not live in were it not for the fact they were the only place that would take our large dogs. One you had to walk on the porch to get to the bathroom, the other was 100 yards from the railroad tracks.

I can't imagine - I have even been loyal to a dog I was relieved when she got to the end of her life [nut case dog - horrible pet - {my NON GSD}

That has got to be one of the worst things I've heard in a long time!
How sick!

I moved all the way from Mass to Florida to buy a home for 2 dogs! Not me for them,
they loved to chase the lizzards! Also no snow bunnies on them!

I really don't understand people. My dogs are my family. People wouldn't ask if I was bringing my kids with me on a move, so why ask about the dogs? Pets are not disposable! This mentality really bothers me.

The dogs go to the vet either one at a time or I take the boys or the "big mama". We were looking to rent a house in NC but it was hard to find one that first of all had a fenced in yard and secondly would take 3 big dogs. I am telling you I had a 45 lb Boxer that was way more trouble than any of the big lugs I have now but this one house wanted a $1,000 pet deposit in addition to the other deposits upfront. I let them know what I thought of their requirements.

I would load them into your car/truck & just drive. Carry water that they are use to. Bring leashes & poop pick up bags food bowls.

Don't forget the old reliable "New baby" and "Divorce". What a bunch of BS - you knew you had the dog before you decided to have a child and as for the divorce I would think the dog shouldn't be penalized because your soon to be ex spouse turned out to be a lemon!

I adopted a dog when I lived in California knowing I would probably be back in Chicago soon. I had every intention of taking her where ever I went and I was in college then. I paid for her plane ticket and mine when I came home and after graduating college only rented places that allowed dogs.

If you can't make a 15 year comittment to a live dog, stuffed dogs are available in toy stores and can be discarded when you grow tired of them.
