Ok, there is a screening process for detector dogs - that is probably what she put him through. Throwing balls into fields, hiding things, making sure they can handle all kinds of situations, retrieving steel pipes, playing tug, etc.

But her scent training probably started with an explosive - e.g., gunpowder or some other substance in smal quantities.

We imprint our cadaver dogs very soon in the process on the target scent.

You need to work with someone who trains detector dogs All police K9 units do, a local SAR team may have contacts for you.

Consider going to a Randy Hare seminar - he has some good stuff on training detector dogs. You have to talk with some folks with cancer dogs about training aids and proofing agents.
