I can see why an officer would stop a car for doing 100 mph. He is trying to avoid having the driver or someone else getting killed.
He was insensitive about the dogs condition and his remarks were inappropriate. Some people, like me, are very fond of their pets and would do anyhting to to save them when the need arises. I don't condone putting human lives in danger to do that though.
He could have handled it better than just saying "get another dog" He should have had some sympathy for someone that was losing a devoted friend.
Obviously, he isn't a canine unit or he would know how attached people can get to their pets. Sounds like maybe he never had a 4 legged best friend. Too bad for him. He doesn't know what great friends they can be.

If you've watched the video you can see the officer's concern is more than valid. The guy was driving 100mph to go 8 miles up the road!!! He was driving in an unsafe manner. Once pulled over you could tell the driver was in no condition to even be driving as he was overwhelmed.

While I agree that the officer's remarks were callous, he had every right to work on calming the driver down before allowing him to continue driving. I have several friends, along with my husband, who drive cross country and it's situations such as this that endangers their lives.

I have to agree. We have no way of knowing if by pulling this guy over the officer actually prevented an accident or not, but he had to get that guy off the road. It's true that his demeanor left much to be desired, but his concern can't be the dog, it has to be the other drivers on the road.

If someone injured or killed a member of my family in a car wreck because his dog was choking, I would want to kill him. My dogs deserve my best efforts to help them in an emergency, but I can't throw human considerations out the window.

The videos do not show it, but his wife told a news show that there is another office there talking to her and that officer kept telling her that the dog was already dead at the time of the stop.

I guess that the dog could have died in an car accident going 100 miles an hour, too....

The dog should have been rehomed -- not killed.

How about a police escort...certainly if it were a dying child, that would have happened. Sensitivity training is a good, good thing...

World Citizen, I don't understand your remark, "the dog should have been rehomed--not killed." Are you suggesting that because they were frantic about getting their dog to an emergency hospital, the dog should have been taken away????

Why escort a dead dog to the vet? The wife stated that the other officer with her had told her the dog was already dead during the stop.

I am pretty sure that World Citizen was making the point that they were so reckless in their behavior that they should not be allowed dogs.
