Hi, I've been fostering a 7 year old female dog for my rescue (yes, the rescue with the tragic loss last week). About 2 weeks ago I noticed her eye wasn't opening due to a membrane covering about 2/3 of the eye. I learned that this is called a "third eyelid". The vet couldn't find damage to the cornea so diagnosed conjunctivitis and gave me antibiotic drops. The drops ran out yesterday, but the eye is not 100%. It is better, but the membrane is still pulling up - from say 10% to 50%. I will call the vet today, but are there other underlying causes that anyone knows about? She was diagnosed with a UTI just before this and the vet was wondering aloud about her water intake, thinking about conditions beyond a UTI. So I guess I'm asking about the hydration issue overall (she seems to drink a lot of water). thanks

I guess so ... when I do an internet search it calls third eyelid prolapse "cherry eye" but the vet didn't even use the full term "third eyelid prolapse" - he just said it was the third eyelid that was pulling up.

It means that your cat is sick. The third eyelid shows when cats are in fighting an illness.

It could well be cherry eye, which is easily repaired surgically.

All I ever had problems with was a inverted eye lid (entropia) and we had to so eyelid down so not roll in. Cherry eye can be fixed surgically also like Viralmd said.

Cherry eye and the third eyelid prolapsing are different.
Cherry eye is where the tear gland on the inner surface of the third eyelid enlarges due to infection.
Prolapsing Eye is when the 3rd membrane is visible over the surface of the eye. It can be due to sunken eyeball,a irritation of the eye, or a congential defect. A sunken eye causes the eyeball to protrude and can be from malnutrition or prolonged illness. Also dehydration.
