All the Katrina rescues we had very bad shape and they do not seem to like to give heartworm treatments.Problem is rescuers cannot go in until all is over.
I just recently finished putting my rescue Jenny thru heartworm treatments...it was not easy for either of us! Her for the shots and being sick and me for feeling her pain too!
I just hope and pray she will be ok!
MSNBC just showed report from today (Mon.) with Anne Currey reporting from somewhere in New Orleans, they were out in the big winds and rain and all of a sudden little beagle mix is running scared dragging leash or chain. This poor thing running for its life in that bad weather...well she picked him up and they took him to safety somewhere. One saved! Happy ending! I hope those people do not get this dog back!

Been through the heartworm treatments. It is not easy and vet told me to keep calm and in kennel carrier.Well I knew if did that and way they were let out get to excited and die. It is the blank look in eyes that gets to you but when all done and life back in eyes you will know did right.
She will do good!
On beagle post.Lucky for him found already and made somewhere safe. How many did not have that or are still chained or locked up? Nice to know still some in this world that care. To all that help and pray for these animals CHEERS to you!
Sept. 1 UPDATE (Update I recieved)
I just got off the phone with Rich from Best Friends who rode out Gustav in New Orleans. When they received a release from "lock down" orders, they immediately hit the streets to assess the damage and the need of animals. My first question was, "Was it bad?," and the reply I got was "It's Katrina all over again!"Yes, there are animals everywhere! He was out for just a couple short hours and saw more than 21 dogs! It's not only New Orleans that was hit, in fact, they have minor damage compared to other areas. We will likely head not only to LA but also into the gulf of Mississippi....Waveland is flooded, homes are flooded which means animals are desperate!
One positive note, for the owners who chose to take their pets with them and seek shelter...we have 1900 evacuees in Oklahoma City that arrived Monday night. The cats/dogs that came with these people were immediately microchipped and the owners are wearing wrist bands with the pet's microchip number on it. The pets and the humans are being kept in the same facility but in different areas. The owners are allowed to visit with their pets at any time. Some of the pets were sent here without their parents. I plan to head down there today to volunteer. I've heard great things about the efforts to care for the pets that have been sent to OKC for temporary shelter.
Everyone at our house will continue to say special thoughts for the animals that need it the most (the ones so cruely left behind). I praise those people who are doing the truly heartbreaking/rewarding work, the people who are able to financially support those efforts, those who have donated much needed items, and those who have been putting out good thoughts for those stranded pets and the wonderful people who are trying to help save those furry souls.
