Has anyone tried the artificial grass for dogs? I live in a condo - small courtyard area - very shaded - no grass will grow. I've considered buying a piece of the artificial grass for my small dogs. K-9 is one name brand, however, while researching I found another less expensive. With S&H (non returnable), it will be abit pricey. With it being non-returnable, I'm wondering - will the dogs really use it? Of course the add says the animals love it - just like grass - run, play, lay down on it. I don't want it if it looks like the old, cheap, indoor/outdoor carpet grass. Any feedback would sure be appreciated.
I visited the home of a breeder who has quite a good sized area of artificial turf from Home Depot. It's specifically for the dogs, and has been fenced off from the yard itself. It's roughly 75' x 50' or so -- looks great, and the dogs like it. She said there's no mud when it rains, the dogs stay cleaner too, and it's easy to pick up the poop. Go for it.
Dogs will use grass, bare ground, cement ... whatever is available. I don't think you'll have a problem.
I have turf in the backyard for my dogs. I like it a lot. Easy maintenance, easier to pick up poop etc. My only complaint is it does tend to smell like urine if you don't hose it down often enough.
You can remove the smell of dog urine by diluting Downey fabric softener and water. Just pour it on the artifical lawn area that smalls, scrub it a bit if you wish then hose off. If you have a big problem with it, you can call your artifical lawn installer and request a maintenace program. If they are professionals, they will know how to remove the smell for you. If anyone has a problem with their lawn being discolored from standing urine or for other reasons, there is also a way to make it green again. Only your professional artifical lawn installer will know how to do this for you.
Mine won't go to the bathroom on cement either; he would rather brave the rain and go on the grass. I guess he likes the grass or I've gotten him accustomed to it or both.
A few of the people in my neighborhood have artificial grass, since it rains like twice a year in San Diego and regular grass looks horrible when not watered. You know exactly when you're approaching their lawn because the smell is horrific. Some go as far as putting up signs to not let your dog pee on their lawn, though if I judge by the smell, the signs are clearly not a deterrant.
And my dog will poop/pee anywhere! Street, sidewalk, grass, dirt, sand, water, you name it. He's very easy when it comes to that. When we moved, I wanted him to go in a particular spot so that we didn't have to walk all the way to the front of the house when he had to go, so I just pointed to it and told him to go here and he did. I swear, I can make him pee on command!
