Staffordshire Bull Terrier
English Bull Dog
Bull Terrier
MiniBull
Great Pyreneese Breeds I would not own
Anything ankle size or "designer" breeds.
I agree...you love who you love, and ANY dog is good in my book. I would never own a small dog again, says I, because he was completely unable to defend himself in a fight. Maybe it's not a good reason, but we'll see how that idea holds up...
Visually, I love Rotties, pitt dogs (not the steroided-up looking ones), Border Collies, cute dogs, mutts, weird looking dogs, dogs that really need a good home, GSDs (friends have), large Poodles (smart cookies)...Frenchies are so cute (I have a French bulldog toy I've had since I was a baby!)...Rhodesians are so elegant looking to me...etc!
I'd never "buy" a dog either...it's the Humane Society or a Rescue. Like someone said - "crap, just bring 'em all on!"
I love, love, love dogs. Can't live without a dog. Like another poster noted, I was also one of those kids who memorized the AKC breed book and made lists of the dogs I would like to own one day.
As an adult, I am drawn to the more 'natural' looking dogs - GSDs, huskies and any dog with pointy ears. Nothing against dogs with 'soft' ears, I just prefer dogs with ears that stand up. I also love curled tails and soft fur.
While I love dogs of all sizes, I wouldn't get a dog now that I couldn't pick up, so maximum size is probably about 50 pounds. I'm not crazy about most teeny, tiny dogs, but, I've always loved pomeranians and I don't mind the hair at all.
Other breeds I would consider are the Doberman, Great Dane, maybe a Wolfhound.
I don't really like any of the hounds. I don't care for labs or retrievers or many spaniels. And small breeds are NOT my thing at all but if I had to choose, it would be either a Dachshund or Bichon Frise. I'm terrified of owning a small breed though for fear I won't notice they are there lol. Give me 50-60lbs of dog ANY day and I'm a happy camper
I too like any dog, except for yappy, spoiled ones, and most of them can be taught not to be that way -- and always had sheperds, collies, rotties when I was a kid -- with one exception a heinz 57 shortie my brother came home with -- what a smart little dog she was!
Now that I'm getting older, and the old "rheumatiz" is kickin in, I find it much easier to handle a smaller dog. Please don't look down on us "small dog" owners -- sometimes little is the best way for some of us. I have a shih tzu/lhasa mix, and he is just a great dog. A shelter pup, I am grateful every day that I was the one who got to rescue him (altho I really think it was the other way around!)
Hmmm. I don't know if I'm ready to rule out any dogs just yet. Like some of the others who have said they read the dog encyclopedia as kids, I did too! Each dog breed has their pros and cons, and there's so much to consider when adding a dog to your life. Different strokes for different folks, too!
With that said, I have owned/been owned by:
* Mixed GSD that my Uncle rescued and then gave to our family
* Pure-bred GSD (my Mom's dream was to own a pure-bred GSD w/papers, etc.)
* A funny, hairy, floppy mixed breed dog owned by the family I lived with when I was an exchange student. My first friend overseas... he didn't care that I didn't speak the language, all he wanted was love!
* And now, my rescued beagle/coonhound mix, Tonka!
