Definitely looks like a new foundland pup to me! Those things get huge, but very gentle.

Yes they can, in pugs there's sometimes white (on the paws or chest) and both parents are pure and solid black (or fawn) - it wouldnt surprise me if it's the same for Newfoundlands esp. if there's Landseer coloring in the background - like pugs, I doubt it w/b desired in the show ring but it doesn't necessarily mean they're mixed (responsible breeders breed away from that but they make excellent pets, which should be spayed/neutered, even though it's just cosmetic). Have seen white on black Great Danes too, min. schnauzers and I think on Golden Retrievers but it's not something one wants to perpetuate. Interesting question.

Can two purebred solid-color dogs have a puppy with markings, or will their pups be one of their parents' colors?

Thanks for your answer. I was thinking more of two different breeds, as I used to have a black and white dog, kind of tuxedo markings, whose previous owner had told the shelter she was Chow/Shar Pei. These are 2 closely related dogs, both solid color, and I always wondered if she didn't have something else in there due to the coloring. Whatever, she was a wonderful dog. It does make you curious though.

Oh, just noticed it's an old thread. Wonder if the OP is still around. Can she post a picture of it now that it's older so we can see if our guesses are accurate?
