My mixed black Lab has a thing that looks like a fur ball on her right leg at her upper leg joint. It's real hard and is attached to her skin. Does blacks labs have skin tumors or some kind?
John, any kind of dog can have fatty lumps - or they can be indicators of a more serious tumor. Best to let the vet look at it before it stars causing her mobility problems. Is she an older dog? (not that it matters, just asking). My oldest Rottie had one on her side like you're describing that scared the wits out of us that turned out to be nothing - but I think even the vet was concerned. Let us know how she's doing and what the vet says...
Many dogs are prone to tumors, some of which are malignant, although most are benign. Hard bumps can be harmless cysts or they can be adenocarcinomas, which are malignant. All new skin bumps really should be checked by a vet. Many times the vet can make an immediate diagnosis, but often the vet may do a fine needle biopsy and send the tissue to be checked by a pathologist to determine if it's going to need to be surgically removed.
I agree, only your vet will know for sure. Fatty tumor, skin tag, abcess - there are so many possibilities.
As Leorah said, your vet will insert a needle and see what, if anything, comes out. That will go a long way towards a diagnosis and it's inexpensive to have your vet do that.
My dog has skin tags and a wart which is small but hard. I agree with everyone else here John, take her to the vet just to be on the safe side. I know it is scary for you since you just lost 1 of your dogs recently. Many dogs do get fatty tumors as they age.
My 7 year old has 1 fatty tumor, 1 skin tag and 1 calcification from where she fractured her sternum. All are different kinds of lumps/bumps and it's important that I know what they are so I can monitor them. I wouldn't have known what was what without my vet's help .
