Default Need tips on Jack Russell Terriers

My oldest has gotten a new puppy, a Jack Russell Terrier. Anyone know if they're good with toddlers? I have experience w/ a lot of breeds, but does anyone have any tips about these types of dogs? The pup is only 2 and a half months old, really small & very active. Any info would be helpful TIA

I have two JRT's and two JRT's cross with Pomeranian. JRT's are very hyper dogs that need stimulation and lots of walks. They aren't dogs for couch potatoes so be prepared. I've had my two oldest ones since they were puppies and it wasn't easy however the female mellowed out as she got older and the male took a while, but having him neutered helped. Important thing is to keep your puppy stimulated and take him for walks at least 2 one hour walks a day as they need to burn off a lot of energy. They also love to dig so if you have a nice garden be prepared .

They have the most awesome characters and it's like living with over active clowns a lot of the time. They can be a handful but they get me off my lazy butt with their antics.

Oh and about toddlers, I have no idea. Mine were only exposed to kids over 7 and still get excited when they hear a child’s voice. Best to start training him young and socialize him. I have the back yard set up with agility game props and put my most hyper one through his paces regularly. He loves it

Jack Russell Terror for sure! I have a girl who will turn 1 in November. The first six months were crazy because she was so hyper! She has calmed down alot since then.

And I agree with Raggy Dee Ann, they need alot of exercise. They also like to jump alot which can be a problem with toddlers. You just need to start training early with them and be patient because it is in their nature to be so hyper. They are full of personality which makes them funny to watch. My girl also has a very short attention span which can cause problems with training.

My children LOVE our JRT. She is very loving and very funny. I would not trade her for a million dollars.

Thanks , I'll have to relay the info. I had no idea they're hyper, so we'll make sure she gets out a lot. The pics are cute, too

Those pics are adorable! My girl looks like the pup in the second photo. These pics do describe them well. They are energetic, courageous, intelligent and WAY TOO FAST TO CATCH!

So true! My JRT mix (with Pom, the vet says) was the most hyper active and clever dog I've ever had. Be forewarned of their activity level ----Overactive clowns is a great description! My boy is now almost 13 years old, and it's only in the last year or two that he's slowed down noticeably. Still an incredibly clever little critter, though...

jimbobournsby - loved the pics. Just adorablely accurate! I can't see the energetic pic though, just the red X. Can anyone else see it?

I have a JRT/dachshund mix. Very hyper, but she lays in my lap quite a bit. She's good around kids, but she's very protective of me, and has snapped at my niece (3 years) while she was in my lap. Don't know if this is true for all JRTs.
