Default How much should my dog be sleeping?

Hi,

I got a lovely little Bichon Frise (1 yr old male) from a rescue about 5 weeks ago. He is a DELIGHTFUL dog - that still needs some training! But he sleeps A LOT. The woman at the rescue DID tell me he was a couch potato and he's been vetted (by the rescue and our Vet). But he sleeps A LOT. Seems fine otherwise...

What is a lot? My 3 sleep when nothing much is going on, maybe 4 hrs total, in short naps in the day and then from about 8 pm-6am. Also, he may be finally relazing and catching up!

Basically dogs, like many other predators will sleep when they have nothing to do, or when they have just eaten.

However, as SouthernBelleInUtah says, how much is a lot?

My dogs both sleep all day, given the chance. My pug was born to sleep and my elderly chihuahua rescue (the one with no teeth and an oral-nasal fistula) is just happy to not be in the shelter and spends her days dreaming of dinner.

I agree, if they do not have anything to do they'll sleep.
When they are alone they'll probably sleep too. But when you're home give toys or even talk a lot to him, (I do that too, and to myself!) that should keep him assertive and interested in whats going on a bit more.

Have fun with you new little one!!!

17 hrs out of a 24 hour day.

Ours sleep (or lay around doing nothing) during the 10 hours we're away from the house @ work. We sleep about 7 hours a nght, and when we sleep, so do they. That makes 17. If someone were home all day, the number would probably drop to 15.
