New Shelter Puppy--Curious about her "mix"
Hi!
I am new to this forum and was super curious what you all thought about our new puppy. The tag at the shelter said she was an Akita Lab Mix.
If she is, in fact, a mix of those two, what can we expect as far as her personality. She seems to be loving and doesn't seem "nippy". I am bit nervous about the potential aggressive behaviors the Akita seems to have. We have a 2yr old. We read that the Akitas can also be a great family dog. We are pretty sure she's going to be a big girl, and are ok with that. I just wondered if anyone had some good input for us.
Here is a picture of her. Thanks a million for any info you might have to offer

When she stands up her tail curls over her hindend.

She is a beauty. I don't know anything about Akitas (just the reputation), but you may find that the lab personality is dominant. Labs are loving and playful dogs, so I wish you well with the new addition.

Awww....cute!
Her markings on her face sure does look like an Akita without a mask. Here's the AKC description, check out "color":
American Kennel Club - Akita
I don't think you need to be nervous about the possibility of Akita in the mix, just be aware that Akitas are a breed that will dominate if you allow it. Cesar Milan has written some excellent books on how to work with breeds such as Akitas, you might want to give those a read if you feel you need a little guidance in maintaining your dominant status with the dog. It's always good to get off on the right foot .
Enjoy your new pup and I'm so glad you adopted a dog from the shelter!

Oh she is adorable! Socialize her well and I do not think you will have to worry about the Akita in her. Over the years my dogs have met several Akitas and they have been very friendly. They were very confident dogs which made Jazz see them as alphas so even she got along great with them which is not always the case with her.
A funny Akita story is years ago my brother was out doing deliveries and pick ups for the party rental store. He got to one home where they were suppose to be home and no one was. People often leave the stuff in their backyards so he went and checked. The gate was unlocked so he opened it and before he got around to the back two very large Akitas came running at him.He stopped and talked to them and they to stopped and looked at him. Having been around dogs his whole life he does read them quite well and before he knew it the largest of the two came up to him jumped up putting his front paws on my brothers shoulders so they were face to face. My brother is 6'4'' so yea that was a big dog. Anyway the dog covered his face in kisses.. My brother got all the rental equipment out without a problem and left a note and left. Later when the owner got home she called and wanted how he got the equipment out as she had "Two big Akitas that guard her place out in the back". My brother told her the story and I believe she was disappointed to know the dogs were not the guard dogs she thought they were.
Anyway enjoy that beautiful baby as I am sure she will make a great dog.

Thank you ALL so much for your opinions on her!
She seems to be a great & SMART little girl, so I am gonna go with the assumption that she's going to be a great addition to our family.
She starts "Good Manners" school in January

What a cutie! Did you know you can do a DNA test for $43.00? We are currently having one done on our rescue "Repo". Not that it will make it big difference...she is loved no matter what...just interesting to find out!

I had a Chow/lab mix and the lab personality dominated. Yours is a beauty and like others said, just socialize her and it will be fine!

She reminds me of a brown version of Ranger. He was a Akita/ Husky mix, but has that distinctive Akita facial markings.
He was adopted a little while back, but he has the most wonderful personality and so gentle!

I was thinking husky not lab in her.. Akita's like pitbull's just got a bad rep. If socialized and raised with little one should all be good and if anything a protector of the family. Dogs are made mean,by lack of attention and affection, training or abuse. You are starting off with socializing which is a big thing to do with any dog. Socialize after gets shots with both other dogs and people. Stay the master and never let dog take control.
