My neighbor has a 6 month old yorkie puppy and she has never had a dog before and asks me about whatever she is concerned about. Last night she asked me to look in the pup's mouth at the teeth and asked if she should worry that it's second set of eye teeth have come in next to the puppy ones. Has anyone ever seen this before and did you just wait to see if the puppy teeth fell out or go to the vet to get them pulled? She does not want to have her sedated to do this if they will come out on their own, any advice?
She just had her spayed and I guess the vet she went to didn't pull them, that really upsets me, they should have at least asked her about doing it. I just wanted to ask if anyone saw a problem with her just waiting to see if they fall out, sounds like that may be OK.
The only problem is that if they're very close to the adult teeth then food will get caught and produce decay. Toy dogs have BIG dental issues as is because their jaws are so small and they still have the same number of teeth as a great Dane, so this isn't optimal.
And I'd advise her to look for a new vet. To be spayed she had to be intubatbed, and to do that the vet/vet tech has to open the mouth WIDE to get the tube in, so obviously nobody examined this little dog!!!! I'd be FURIOUS.
I am going to tell her about my vet, she is so good and I know she would have noticed. Good point on food getting stuck/decay, I'll tell her if she waits she should try to brush her teeth daily to keep that area clean.
my 6 month old shih tzu is going in to be spayed this week and to have her mouth looked at when she is asleep, not only has she some baby teeth remaining and needing removed but she is growing 2 full rows of bottom adult teeth and from what we can see extra adult top teeth but she wont let my vet have a good enough look so I dont know the full extent of her problem until this week, has anybody else ever came across this before? I know she is going to need a nasal widening op and her soft palate operated on due to an obviously bad breeder but I am not sure if the double set of teeth are connected also, any info gratefully received
I have heard of dogs with extra adult incisors but have never seen it! Wow! Would love to see a picture before they remove them! What is her name (is it a cute little sharky name?)
Our shih tzu had an extra row of teeth. His son had 4 rows of teeth altogether.
