Another advantage of not neutering would be weight management. Intact males rarely become overweight and with decreased mobility, your new guy is at risk of getting chubby which would be awful for his back problems. Leaving him intact would reduce his risk of obesity.
I am aware of this, but right now the poor guy is positively scrawney and I'd love to see him fill out a bit. I'll be very careful with portions and I don't give any of my animals commercial treats...just real, plain boiled or roasted meat and weekly yogurt! But thanks for bringing up that point, as it is a valid one, especially for people who have pets with weight problems in the first place.
Still scratching my head about relieving the dog yourself. (don't have an appropriate appalled emoticon)
I know!!! I came across a site on-line written by a very adamant non-spay/neuter activist who said it is a very "special bond" one must have with their pet and was trying to make it sound like it was a beautiful thing to do for them...I didn't know whether to laugh hysterically or throw up!

There's a name for that "special bond" and I think there may be a biblical prohibition against it, not to mention state laws.

Nope, I don't see an emoticon to adequately show what I'm thinking.
If anyone told me they did THAT I'd steer clear away from them. YUCK! There is something wrong w/ people that do THAT! In more ways than one. I don't even want to know what these kind of sick people would do w/ a son in the house that "found himself".
I was thinking the same thing. I'm starting to feel the milk from breakfast turn over in my stomach.
Sometimes it is required...as in the artificial insemination. Years ago I had a female Golden who in order for her to get prego, we needed to artificial inseminate her. She was part of a breeding program out in Ca. and the owner of the kennel did this often in order to complete the breeding. The very last time, she completed the deed, I had to carry home the semen to a vet....and it needed to be kept warm. I was told to carry it inside my bra for the body warmth...which I did!
Both vet and kennel owner wanted to know if I wanted to learn...eliminate the middle man, so to speak...I adamantly refused....this is why they were being paid the big bucks!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can not imagine any other reason for this to be done!
Well, things have gone from bad to worse. What I thought at first was whining due to a new environment and some post-injury discomfort has escalated into much more severe indications that there is more going on with this dog than we knew. He would whine even when he was freshly cleaned, fed, and getting petted...it became apparent the dog is in a lot of pain. Sometimes he would just be sitting there and then suddenly shake once or twice and whine. Then today he started vomiting, and there was blood in his stool. His urine smells like death, and he barely acknowledged me when I approached him, (he usually gets super happy) so I called my friend and asked her if they had ever done any tests to make sure everything else was okay with him...and no dice. They treated only the bare necessities to keep the poor dog alive. She came by on her way to work and agreed, he just looked awful and definitely needed to be put on fluids...(I couldnt get him to eat or drink much after the vomiting, which was liquid...) so she took him in with her to beg the doctors to treat him and determine what kind of quality of life, if any, this poor creature has. I have also contacted some rescue groups in the event they decide to turn their backs on us, I simply dont have thousands of dollars for surgeries and tests and all the other things he will need. This totally sucks. I thought I was helping a dog who had a chance at a good life...if it turns out he is in and will always be in pain, I have only prolonged his agony. I miss his little face...even though I have only known him a short time, the tears keep coming...please say a prayer for the little guy, whoever is out there reading these words...
