Hi,

This problem has probably been addressed before. but...

How do you introduce a kitten to your dogs?

I have a pit mix (14 mths), Rasta, and a bullmastiff (10 mths), Kaya. Neither are at all aggressive However, Rasta loves to chase squirrels.

Any suggestions?? I really want a kitten.

We got Porkchop, our English Bulldog, in October, and a month later got Cali, our Sphynx. When we brought her home, we just put them together to see what they do and they loved each other from the very beginning. I'm sure that's not the proper way to introduce pets to each other, but they are the best of friends now and love each other.

I put the cat in a room with a child's gate to get acclimitized. When the cat is ready, they'll come out of the room - usually when the dog is asleep or not looking. Give the cat a place to get away from the dog and it should be OK.

MAX what a pair.. too cute

Since your dogs are grown I would introduce them slowly, but you will have to see how they interact. A baby kitten is more than likely going to be afraid when you first bring him home. I would put him in a bedroom/bathroom with a baby gate up and with litter box and food, bringing him out several times a day with the dogs around so they can see and smell him. I do this for a couple of weeks letting mine out a little longer over time so they get use to each other. I also have other cats so this works will to introduce them too.

My kitten was less than 6 mos old and not too sure about the dogs but they liked the fact that he ran from them. After a couple of weeks, they were use to seeing him and if he didn't run, they left him alone. I have 1 dog who will try to herd him but Jack will just jump onto the table or go in his safe room which is gated off so the dogs can't get in.

I set my kitty up in my bedroom, with litterbox, food, water & radio and gradually got the dogs used to his being there. I would take him out (still holding him at first) for a few minutes at a time, several times a day. The duration got longer and longer (slowly) until he was well (he had been sickly at the beginning) and I was sure everyone was going to get along okay. It took about a month to get to that point, (though I erred on the side of safety, so it is possible it could have been done more quickly). Now they are all great friends!
