Song, I'm really sorry to hear about your dog. I'm going out on a limb here, but maybe the vet just slipped. As Vemur said, it's clinic speak. I'm sure they didn't mean it, but I'm sure at a time like this you're probably going over it in your head.

Don't worry about it.....take care of YOU right now. You have some healing. And once you're feeling up to it, look up a new vet if it makes you feel better. Even if they are a little further away it may ease your mind a bit.

You'll be in my thoughts. -Cindy

I'm with you Song! I'm aware everyone can have a bad day...but I would for sure let this vet/staff know how they offended you. May be you can take the time to put your words together in a well thought out letter to your vet. It could be a very therapeutic process.

I do appreciate you alls support and input on this.
Before this, my dog has been to the vet for rabie shots and that's it. In Texas, same thing.
The best vet and staff I've dealt with are in San Antonio Texas where I used to live. He was not my vet but he was my brothers vet. He was caring and so was his staff when I took my brothers dogs in and he had 3 dogs at the time and one was always going in for something.
Last June, his chow died in my arms while my brother was out of town and I was caring for his dogs. The vet and the 2 girls on staff were helpful with me in getting him creamated so he could be buried and they sent a card.
I guess I'm saying this because these people were nice and caring but it would be crazy for me to drive my other dog 12 hours away if I ever needed a good vet but I think it may be best is I find another one.
I never thought of writing a letter but I'll give myself a couple of weeks to be more calm (hopefully) and then that's what I'll do.

I am so sorry, its so hard when we have to do these things, they just don't think and realize our pet is like a baby to us

Aw, they didn't have to use that word, no respect, when i have to do this with any of my pets, they usually know in advance, We get taken into a room, I stay with my dog, then the office gal comes in and asks me for payment for the OV , then they peek in and ask me when time is right for me, they also ask if I am taking my dog home to be buried, I always do. They offer a choice of cremation.

Beforehand they ask me to bring a blanket or sheet etc to put my dog in.

After 1 week i get a sympathy card. My vet does not charge for putting a dog down as long as we are clients there.

but the charging me for the OV (to make sure dog is sick and needs to be put down) thats crazy, they knew my dog and knew his time was coming. Just a money game

After poking him for the 6th or 7th time I told the vet to stop because the kid was thrashing and not happy at all with the situation, and I felt it was not the best way to spend his last moments. The vet looked at me and said 'Calm down, it's just a goat'. My mom had to escort me out of the room because I was yelling and cussing the vet out. I did end up going back, we put my goat down and I took the body to be buried in my yard. That vet has lost a LOT of business because of that.
You are so right, IT IS NOT JUST A GOAT, whats wrong with these people, it was bad enough you had to go thru that, oh what I'd like to do to some of these vets !!!!

Don't you think that if it were just a money game, they would charge for the euthanasia too?

Song, I'm sorry for your loss. I think writing a letter to let the vet know your concerns is a great idea.

Holy cow, I didn't know the next vet was 12 hours away! Ok, this is totally different....you're going to have to say something to this vet. You're going to have to use them, at least in case of an emergency. Maybe send them a note with your thoughts.....they may not even realize they're offending people....at least you'll feel better and like Amazon said, probably therapeutic.....xoxo

My vet charges for euthenasia.... he also charges for just walking in the door, 'supplies' i.e. needles and syringes (which I don't mind, but he charges $25 or so for a needle and syringe that I know only costs .50 at most), charges extra if you want your dog let out of the little kennel cage to be walked during it's stay, charges nearly double after 6pm and on weekends etc etc. He's terrible, but unfortunately all of the 'large animal' vets that I absolutely loved stopped doing goats because it wasn't making money, so I was stuck with the lousy local dog/cat vet.
