Question, isn't charging for writing a prescription unethical? I remember an old thread that mentioned that it was in the vet's ethical code of conduct to honor their patient's requests to fill rx's elsewhere. I'm going to try to find that thread. May be I am remembering incorrectly.

Found the thread, but it doesn't say anything about charging a fee (again, not that I am aware of) just that you have the right to ask for the prescription to be filled elsewhere. I still think it is silly and possibly unethical for a vet to charge for a written prescription.

So, you diagnose and treat your pets yourself? That sounds like a great idea.

You know not everyone who owns pets can afford the prices vet charge and when you have been around long enough to know what is wrong with your senior pet who has been treated for the same issue before you should be able to get them their medication without an xtra $45 bill..... owning a pet shouldn't be a luxury it should be a necessity.

My vet does not charge and I have never had one that did, but I would not object to a small fee, you are using up their time. They or someone they have to pay must look up your pet's records, must call or take the call to authorize the medication, and must make notations of it in your pet's records. I am actually surprised more don't charge. There are more than a few doctors for humans that charge medication refill fees.

It can be odd when an ancient thread is dug up, but sometimes they provide some good info.

Thank You....
My Darling Pom passed away.
I was crushing the pills, mixing it with grape Pedialyte, putting it into a syringe then injecting it on the rear side of his mouth. That was the best way. My poor baby, when he would see me coming with the syringe... I could tell he didn't like it. I felt like a psycho! I had to do it to save his life.
I'm still crying.

Basically you can, but I'd sugget you to get a prescription first, because pets need proper meds.
