We have a 4 year old 90 lb dog that we adore. We got Sam from the pound a few years ago and now is our pampered pet.

He recently tore a ligament in a knee and we haven't the money to repair it and given his age I'd rather not put him down.

Now, I'm in Oregon and I will contact the OSU Vet School- but aside from that, any ideas where in a teaching environment we might be able to get his knee repaired? Young vets surgeons must learn some how.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Have you looked into Care Credit? They have several options for paying for veterinary care, some like a credit card some like 90 days same as cash. Go to CareCredit® Healthcare Finance - Payment Plans and Financing for Cosmetic Surgery, Dental, Vision, Hearing, Veterinary & Other Medical Procedures and select veterinary from the drop down box for type of doctor, put in your zip code, and a list of vets in your area who participate in their program will come up. I don't know about OSU but I know that Purdue accepts the program in both their large & small animal facilities.

Thanks, Racelady, but my wife lost her job and we can't take on any more debt.

Hey Blazer, have you called around to local vets and told them about your situation? Several years ago, my then boyfriend had a little dog, who was injured unexpectedly, and he didnt have the funds to do surgery. He took the dog to one of the vets, (was in Forest Grove then, maybe Hillsboro...dont know if they are still around.) and after explaining the situation and all, the vet ended up reducing the fee conciderably, and also letting him make payments. And it was as he could payments. You know, when you can only pay 10.00 one month, just as long as SOMETHING was coming in.....
anyhow, maybe worth calling around for?
Best of luck!

I'll give it a try and I've struck out with OSU, DoveLewis and the Humane Society (where we got Sammy).

Blazer Prophet -
Is your dog a purebred (or close enough to pass for one)? If so, which breed? Several breed clubs have assistance groups that fund & fund-raise for extraordinary veterinary care that owners cannot afford. If you post his breed here, I'll try to track down some help for you.

It's worth trying. Just remember that the bad economy has hit vets too. They may be less willing/able to offer financing options now.
