Default Advice - Adopting adult male shih tzu with current adult female shih tzu

Hi. I'm new to the forums and have a few questions on adopting an adult male shih tzu.

We have a 4yr old female shih tzu and 2 cats. We think that we have found a great companion for our female shih tzu. He is a male 3yr old shih tzu that is up for adoption. Does anyone have experience with adopting an adult male into a household with an adult female? What would be possible problems? Both of the dogs are spayed/neutered. Please give any advise.

Have you introduced him yet to your female shih tzu? How dominant do you think his personality is? I don't think you will have any problems if he's a laid back personality. I have a male St/Llhasa mix that was a shelter dog, got him when he was probably around that age, and he got along fine with the cats already in residence. I also foster other small dogs from time to time, and I babysit a lot of my friends dogs when they go on vacation, and he's always gotten along fine with them, whether he "knows" them or not. He is a very outgoing personality and extremely laid back. Only times I ever see him hesitant is around big puppies/younger dogs -- I think he's afraid they might step on him. Once he gets to know those bigger dogs though, he's fine. Good luck!

P.S. I just checked the link, looks like you would do fine with him!

I dont think you will have many problems. Boys & girls do a lot better than girl girl or boy boy. Can you introduce them on nutural grounds? IF you are getting him from a rescue I am sure they would help you on this.

BTW I Want PICS LOL!!!

Thanks for the replies. I filled out the application to adopt him. Hopefully, in a few days the two of them can meet each other. If we end up adopting him, I'll try not to forget to post pics. We like our shih tzu with shorter hair. Maybe Max will be taking a trip to the groomer. lol

we got a male dog after having a female and they are the best friends you could ever imagine. One wont go for a walk with the other one. we did have to have them meet on neutral grounds, and they did have little arguements at first and still the more dominant one (the female) will snip at the male. He never does anything back though. And it never goes more than that. good luck. I hope it works out well. But male/female is the best way to go.
