Default Don't let him get fat

I also have a pembroke welsh corgi! I loved when Shermyn was a puppy and he would sleep on his back like in your one picture.

He's now 3 and still really, really hyper. He did stop all the chewing at around 1 year, but he's still a handful. Apparently, male corgis can be under the impression that they are the alpha of the house, and you and the family are sheep that need to be herded. We love him, but it's often a power struggle.

One of the most important things we learned when he was a puppy is don't get into the habit of giving him table scraps or other people food. Don't over-treat him. Corgis often get obese really quickly and they get back problems and othe health problems. It's much easier to prevent him from getting fat than to make him lose weight after he's gotten fat. Too many corgis end up looking like a huge ottoman!

Shermyn loves carrots, so that's his most frequent treat. In just 3 months over the winter (not getting walked every day) he put on like 5lbs! But now that we're walking, he's back down to normal weight again.

I watch a show on TLC about dwarves, and the woman was once talking about how as a dwarf/ little person, she has to really watch her weight, and just a few pounds on her frame can make her technically "obese." Corgis are pretty much dwarves.

I love how they always look like they're smiling!

Congrats on your Corglette...they are smart and quick and athletic, puppy classes are a must with this breed...they will out think you in a heart beat...LOL. Herding breeds are lots of fun! so enjoy

Also, watch their backs while they are young...try getting involved with the local PWC club...

Puppies go either full tilt boogie or down for the count...I just got a Sheltie and he's now 15 weeks old

Thanks again everyone! Chevy has been feeling a little rough the last two days. He went to the vet yesterday, and the vet said he might be a little groggy. He got sick when we took him outside last night, and he threw up a couple more times last night. He's finally perking up some now though!

Just for a little update!

We've had Chevy for two weeks now,and it's been quite a ride. Last Wednesday and Thursday morning he was just awful. His behavior was terrible, and I also woke up in somewhat of a bad mood. I came close to saying we needed to give him away which really upset my wife, but she almost agreed with me.

Thursday night it was like he was a totally different dog! He's been great ever since for the most part except he still nips at us WAY too much. He now has one ear up and one down!! Hopefully the other one will perk up soon!

We absolutely love this dog to death, and I can tell he loves us too!!!! He will get a big test this weekend when he meets my rambunctious 4 year old nephew!

Here some more pics I took:

I love this little guy so much!

Sorry, I'm just catching up on this thread. Your little guy is adorable...and I love his name! All of my animals have, in some way, the name of a car we have owned. We two are "car" people (Notice my screen name?) Chevy was one of my past Goldens who was truly my heart. His AKC was "Our Chevy Trade".
Looking forward to seeing your little guy grow! Oh...and happy anniversary to both you and your wife!

I LOVE the one-ear-up, one-ear-down stage!!! Take lots of pictures because it doesn't last long. Plus it'll remind you of how cute he is and how much you love him when he gets into that chewing-up-the-house stage!
