Have a crate so the dog may go there, some toys, some treats so the dog does feel safe. The dog is
mega afraid, which is normal. Your children, which will be hard for them should go on as b4 the dog
did come home. They also, could offered the treats in a quiet way, so the dog gains trust. The
dog needs to feel loved, and able to trust. Put yourself in the place of a dog, and going to the shelter
and now what? Also let the dog do what is needed for awhile to adjust. Even a dog who has been
in a home from day 1 needs time alone, and a safe retreat! I had dogs who loved to go under the bed, there most favorite place. They just loved that place, and don't believe all the dog books you do read, it sounds as if you have a real great dog, which is still a puppy! Once when young we
had a cat from the ASPCA the cat would hide, not eat, and we were told it may need to be returned, we of course, did not like this. We were sent to the movies, and when we came hope the cat had decided to eat, all ended well.

everything I have read about rescue dogs is that it can tae a very long time for them to feel confident, some never fully recover from their bacground. the best you can do is give her all the time she needs. I would hope she has a place she can go that is her safe zone where she can get away, it doesn't have to be a crate at least a rug in the corner. if you crate her I would probably leave the door open. some rescue dogs have been in a vrate for 6 years or more and I doubt going bac in a crate at a new place would do much to make the dog happy. love her the best you can. I bet she will come around. you are to be commended for taking her in. I thin each day she will improve and the rewards your family will feel this time next year, huge!

I agree 200%.
Please be patient and remember all this Dog might have already gone through.
A new place can be scary.
Best of luck.

I have two children who are experienced and gentle with dogs but none of us are experts. We walk the dog on a leash and read all about pack leader and even that a new rescue dog shouldn't be showered with affection, but eventually this could be very depressing.

What can we do? and How long should we expect it to take?

As a side issue- SPCA lady told his this was a fun playful doggie - loved to play fetch and just a bit nervous at the store because of the animals and noise. We can't be talking about the same animal. She rarely has eaten but probably ate a few bites if we were all gone - I suspect that SPCA told us all this to get rid of the dog. We are hanging in there -we've rescued baby possums and other problematic animals but this time we were hoping for a real pet - maybe it just takes time.
Why not have a new dog feel loved, and a part of your family? The dog is a puppy still, regarding the food
did they tell you what the dog was eating? As I did say, as we all would be
afraid, and wondering what now? The dog needs Love, and then the dog will
trust. Since the dog is not eating , try, to boil up some hamburg, and drain the fat, then boil up some rice in the bag. That is done, and the is doggy
delight, ingnore the dog, and if the dog comes to check, in an upbeat sound
do say supper, or dinner! Then you may mix some hamburg, with the rice,
since the dog is afraid, put it into a dish away from you. After a while, I think that may work, the treats, get the dog on baby carrots, good for the teeth! Your dog needs to be secure, and loved, the rest later! If you do the crate, place it in your room, so the dog is now part of the so called pack. Your dog is special, becaue, the dog is not so sure you are the perfect home! Love, and Trust! The hamburg and rice just warm it up in the microwave!

She does have a place to go sort makeshift shelving where she can sleep on my clothes and can hardly be reached. Very quiet -she hasn't made a sound. Doesn't seem to need to go to the bathroom but we walk her a few times a day anyway. My children are quiet and warm around her - no problem there. I gave her a little treat each day- piece of sirloin very small yesterday and a bite of chicken breast tonight.

Here are two pictures - does she seem like Italian Greyhound-Whippet? After all everything else SPCA told me was wrong! lol

SPCA is in sales not service.
from the dogs perspective he knew his former owner would never give him up but they did.
he figures he is toast, you are just a delay to the inevitable. its about failure he is just waiting for the other shoe to drop. arklexee said some great stuff about breaking the trance.

I don't know enough about the different breeds to be able to tell what she is. she is short haired but unless I saw her standing I wouldn't guess greyhound or whippet. she does look like she has had puppies recently as her teats are not completely flat. just continue to do what you are. stay lovong and kind and try to have patience i bet she will come around soon enough.

No she does not as the dog I have been thinking of, but she is sweet! Therefore, a wee to big
for the crate, however, can you get her a dog pillow bed? Also have that in your room! We all sometime enjoy the quiet time! Get her a ball, or frisbe!
and if you have petsmart around etc., say ok, that word seems to be the phrase they do use in books, or did? get her into the car, and say shopping!
Chew bones, etc., then at night, when they are doing homework, say to the dog, want a belly rub! it does take time! Carrots are real good also, the tiny ones! and when the dog comes, and etc., say not a thing and give a small treat. even get the dog treats, and just say good dog, and reward! The dog
needs to Trust you guys! Why care what they did tell you, the dog, puppy has a home with you, and start now, as day one! Having the perfect dog, child etc., would be as? I do hope you gave the dog a name! I was always one for bringing home dogs, and kittens, and birds. Even when older, I may get a puppy
and the puppy was picked out, and, I got an older dog, and was just in the kitchen with the baby gate, and it just did happen! Same breed, just a dog
who did need a home more than the 8 week old puppy! This dog was so afraid to ride in a car? It did take time, but, a little bit at a time! Your dog is sweet! I name her Black Beauty! Blackie, or Beauty! nick names only, please! Cheese is a treat most dogs do enjoy! just do tiny bits! Say you are walking etc., and she does a sit etc., reward, and treat, then go on! Think that comes from clicker dog book! Belly rubs! Dogs are social, and with love, and kindness, it will work out! Your dog, is young, and why rescure, maybe as a cute dog, and then they grow. Just do the hello, and pet
the dog if the dog wants it, then go on for now, as you did! Hard yes! She looks as a dog ready to love, but trust she needs.

Aren't Italian Greyhounds typically shy and nervous anyway? Even if she wasn't abused, being in a new place would just perpetuate the shyness and nervousness even more. I'd give her a few weeks to see how she makes her adjustment. She just may be too nervous to eat. I've had fosters come into my home where they wouldn't eat for a day or two except for a taster of something, and sometimes wouldn't eliminate for a day and a half!

She probably just needs time and quiet.

I love IG's. Wish I had one.

yes, give her dog treats as often as you can, that way she will associate your hands with good things. lots of puppy mill rescues are terribly afraid of hands.
