He is tooooo cute! No dander or shedding? That breed might work for me...I am allergic to pet dander, have asthma, and eczema. Bischons give me a reaction...some poodles. I met a cockapoo once that didn't bother me at all. It is such as curse because I love animals, especially doggies.
no dander, no shedding, it's great. I would say the only downside to this breed is the constant grooming...but I am so used to it...it's routine now...I like to keep him with a short cut, maintenance wise it's easier. You see alot of shih-tzu's with long hair, mainly the show dogs. I considered adopting a rescue dog or a dog from a shelter, but it would not work for me. I have always loved this breed, we grew up with a mutt and german shepherd, they were so big, the hair would be all over...they were contained to a family room/kitchen/mud room so they were not allowed upstairs and stuff...but the hair was crazy...I remember mom vacuuming everyday...so I would never discourage anyone from checking out a shelter or rescue, I felt the heat from family members saying "there are so many dogs that need a home" why did you go and buy a dog? Do what works best for your situation...my sister's first Pug they obtained through a breeder, the second one they adopted from a Pug rescue
LOL I live in German Shepherd Dog hairy hell! But then again my 4lb Chihuahua can shed an amazing amount too. It's a love/hate relationship. Love the dogs/hate the hair and dirt. Wonder what they love/hate about me? Hmmmm......
We also have a shih tzu as I am allergic. NO shedding and the other thing that we really loved is that they are very sweet dogs, not an aggressive bone in their bodies. They need lots of love and attention and like to be where ever the people are. Definately not a watch dog.
I can't find any good recent photos...Buster is 3 now. We got him from a breeder. I tried for 2 years to find a shih tzu rescue dog but no one would talk to me because I had children under 5. Literally, couldn't even get some rescues to call me back since I was up front about my kids. I do realize though that some rescues should not be placed with children. Anyhow, for the first time ever we bought a pup for $500.
Here are some photos from when he was a little bitty puppy, when we first took him home.

Reason: I can't get photos to show...oh pooh
We have an Airedale. Doesn't shed, but a lot larger than a Cockapoo, so probably not a good substitute Also paid a lot since she came from a good breeder. The breeder was in AL--they breed for good Southern doggie manners. (KIDDING).
IMHO - My Airedale was the sweetest dog I ever owned - great with kids, great watch dog. If we get another dog, it'll be an Airedale. Another good mix is a Schnoodle - cross between Schnauzer and Poodle. We bought the Airedale from a reputable breeder, but my son had to have the Schnoodle from a mall pet store. Amazingly, he had no health problems and lived for almost 18 years. I don't think they're an AKC recognized breed, but checked online and they're about $700. My mom just got a Cockapoo puppy last week.

Please do not frequent pet stores. If you only knew what goes on behind the scenes, and what your money actually supports, you wouldn't go near one.
I'm glad you had no heartbreak with your schnoodle. You are fortunate, and among the few who don't. Same with your mom and her cockapoo that she just got last week. I hope she doesn't have a problem down the road.
But to those who haven't YET gotten one, but are thinking of getting one of these or who might be taken in by a pet store puppy, please think longand hard, and do some checking. When you buy from these sources, you don't know a lot about the background of the animal and its basically a grab bag for high $$

My mom got the cockapoo from a breeder. I know I took a chance with the schnoodle. I wouldn't do it again. We'll either get another airedale or a dog from the pound when we're finally settled. I'm a sucker for stray cats. LOL

Thanks fo rthe info nynraleigh. I have never met a shih-tzu in person. I'll have to seek one out and see how I do around them. They are so cute! What's their temperment like?
I know what you mean about stray cats. We have three shelter kitties.
they're adorable (aren't they all?) !
Not to get offtrack on the dog thread. We have lots of strays that people take care. The Scamps pet store was in the strip mall located in proximity to our neighborhood. The manager was taking in cats for adoption with the caveat if they weren't adopted in a certain time period, the owners would have to reclaim. Well, of course, the owner's didn't, the pet store went out of business and the manager released all the cats into our neighborhood. My one neighbor spayed four and he feeds them. Another neighbor spayed and feeds six. I've got three also. DH says no more. LOL
