Ok, I am researching a new alternative food for JD, my allergy dog. He has been eating Natural Balance Potato and Duck. However, in the past month he's stopped eating it, and I just found out they are using a new formula. So I'm considering the Wellness Simple Solutions Rice and Duck formula. Has anyone had any experience with this food?

Is rice an ok ingredient? I thought grain free foods were better?

Wellness Core is grain free. I'd love to feed it but with 6 big dogs, several on expensive meds it's just not realistic since it is expensive.

It depends on what your dog is allergic to. Most dogs - no, not all, but most - are allergic or intolerant of gluten. Rice has no gluten and it is easily digested. In the larger scheme of things, rice usually isn't counted in the "bad grain" catagory.

The lack of ingredients (one protein + one carb) make it ideal for anyone who has a dog allergic to things commonly found in even grain-free foods, e.g. carrots, peas, eggs, kelp, fish oils, etc. While a "standard grain" intolerance or allergy is probably more common, try finding a food that doesn't have at least one of the ingredients I just mentioned.

I've been using Simple Solutions for a couple of years. I've been more than satisfied. It's not cheap, but you also only feed very little - I've found I require far less Simple Solutions food than, say, any of the LID Natural Balance range.
