Silly question: Hobbs, the dog we adopted the shelter 2 months ago finally barked last night after 2 months of silence. He looks like a lab/pitbull mix but he sounds like a hound! If he sounds like one, must there be one in the blood line?

My hound bays like you hear in the movies - whooooooooo. He does that to sirens nearby. Does Hobbs sound like that?

It doesn't necessarily indicate a hound bloodline. Hounds have a propensity to howl, because their "jobs" were to lead the hunters -- often out of sight, to prey. Still, wolfs (now proven to be the ancestors) howl, so all canines have the "gene."

There are three pictures of gorgeous Hobbs in SunInHair's profile.

He's a beautiful boy. I don't see any hound in him, but what do I know? All I know is that he's a cutie-pie and that I want to hug him.

Thank you! I think he's rather handsome. He loves hugs and cuddles. About the hound bark: none of my previous lab and lab mixes sounded like that when they barked. Yes, all dogs are capable of howling, but I've only heard hound breeds "howl bark". Hard to see his markings in the photos, but they almost could be hound-like--except his ears are awfully small. He sure loves running after rabbits.

I dunno... my roommate's dog is supposedly Shar-Pei and Basenji, and she howls like a Beagle when she's excited! Basenjis do have a tendency to make odd sounds, but it's usually a "yodel" rather than a howl. Anyway, your handsome guy looks like a Lab to me... but who knows?? Personally I love the howls, especially when they come from a northern breed (Husky, Malamute, etc). Too cute!

I think its just how pits bark. I have a full blood apbt, and he has a hound-like bark, a did my 2 previous pit/lab mixes.

Its not the typical "Woof! Woof!" But more of a "Woooo woooo woooo" lol.

So many breeds went into creating the pit that it can be hard to pinpoint exactly where their distinctive bark originated from

looked at your pics...i could definatly put him as a badly bred pure lab lol...but theres something about the tail, and the eyes that scrame theres some northern breed in there, huskies and mals are both bayers

there certainly could be hound in there, but ive met many dogs with no hound blood that are also bayers...
