My dog has his rabies tag, his microchip tag, and a tag with his name/our names/our phone number & address. Which is funny, because the one time he got out, animal control picked him up and NOBODY called us. We called them after hours of scouring the neighborhood.

Both of our dogs are microchipped, have a regular tag with their name and two different numbers just in case one of us can't be reached, a rabies tag, and a tag that says they're microchipped. They haven't escaped yet.... but I'd freak out if they did

Does your beloved pet have a current ID tag? Please get one!
Excellent suggestion!!! An ID tag with the owners number is the quickest way for someone with a found pet to reach the owner. Chips are great in the sense that they don't get lost but many in the general public aren't even aware they exist and taking a dog to be scanned may be more effort than the finder is willing to put out. Many people who would happily call an owner immediately might be unable to take a pet in for the night until the vet clinic opens. Your post makes a VERY good and probably often overlooked point as I am sure many with chips or rabies tags might not take those issues into consideration.

Every dog should have a personal ID tag and not hooked on with those little round things the petstore gives you with them....they unwind and the tag can fall of. Happened to two of my dogs one day, there tags were gone!
Go to the hardware store and get a good solid S hook!
I put both my home # and cell #.

I take key chains apart and use the "ring".

I used that ring once for the tag on my dog and had a bad, freak experience, that round ring got caught on the bottom of one of my floor standing candle lanterns and the dog was dragging this whole 6 foot wrought iron thing on my floor! (the whole thing also tipped over) Was dangerous. Good thing I was home to unhook her off it.
