If you happen to see them outside in their yard or something just walk over and say, "I'm not sure if you were aware, but your dog has been doing his business a lot in my yard." Then just wait to see how they respond.
If you have to knock on the door say the same thing, but add 'it's becoming a real problem." as in "I'm not sure if you were aware, but your dog has been doing his business a lot in my yard and it's starting to become a real problem." (Say it nicely-understanding tone).
If that doesn't work. Let me know and I have other steps.

Thursday007....my response was intended for you, but no offense to others!
I would just go say something and ask to either leash up or kennel up...Could be like my neighbor call cops even when mie were kenneled she tried it. Cops told her if wanted to try with mine kenneled need to DNA the piles and if found out not mine then she get charged with harassment...
Still just go politely tell them, no notes or letters as that causes problems.
Unless you are 100% sure you know who is relieving their pet in your yard, I would not accuse one owner. There are lots of people who own dogs, plus wild animals. It's hard to be certain.
I would suggest putting a sign in your yard that says "No Dogs". I'm an optimist and have faith that most owners would see that sign and respect your property rights.
Only after you have continued incidents of violations of your private property, and 100% certain of the voilator would I call the police. Call code enforcement though and not 911.
Today so far, no smelly citings . There are many dog lovers in this community and rarely do you see someone not picking-up after their fury love and the dogs are to be on a leash. We have resided here 5 yrs and this is the first time we have had this issue. One night my DH was having a neighborly discussion and 1 of their dogs did it's business after the long walk on our yard, it was no biggie just a one dropper, but still right in front of DH and she didn't make any attempt to pick it up. DH didn't address it then and there and just shrugged it off. Oh well, hopefully it will be resolved. Thanks for all your responses.
