You should go to your local Animal Control Shelter or a local rescue group. You will have to pay an adoption fee, but that fee covers the puppies first shots, spay/nueter, and usually microchipping. The fees will vary depending on what has been done for the puppy. Animal Control will have the lowest fees and will have done the least (meaning you will have to get the spay done probably).

One other thought if you can't afford to pay a fee to adopt a puppy then you may not be financially able to provide for one. They can be really expensive if they should fall sick and they need to have their shots maintained each year. Not to mention puppies need them more than once a year.

Because of what the other posters said, there is no such thing as a free puppy! If you love a particular breed, look up rescue organizations in your area. I believe a woman was posting today trying to find homes for some rescue beagles. Just the size dog you are asking about!

Do some research and find out what you really want. Get the right dog for you and you will love him dearly and he will be a member of the family. And that's what he always wanted!

I agree 100%!! I adopted my dog last January ('06), and couldn't even begin to add up the costs so far... but for the sake of the original poster, let's try.

Pet store (food, treats, toys, etc.) - $100-150/mo.
4 regular vet visits - $50-100 a pop
Advantage & heart-worm stuff - approx. $300/year
1 emergency vet visit (important to keep in mind!) - $700
Beginning & intermediate training classes - $200 total
Private training (just started) - $100/hour
Leashes, collars, harnesses, tags, etc. - approx. $300-400 total (my baby is spoiled, LOL)
Miscellaneous - God only knows.....

Too lazy & scared to add it all up, but that's a lot of moolah! So yeah, if somebody can't afford an adoption fee (which may or may not be the OP's case), they should re-consider dog ownership at this time.

I also agree with this post, about researching carefully... all dog breeds are VERY different, with a variety of personalities, exercise needs, health issues, etc. So what's right for one family, might be a horrible match for another. Anyone watch "Dog Whisperer?" - great examples of the wrong dogs for people. And that's how so many dogs end up at the pound, once the novelty of "cute puppy" wears off.

Anyway, I do think you (original poster) should research breeds first, and figure out the best fit... I did that for over a year, but then ended up with a mutt. LOL! I do have some idea of what he is, though, and knew he was the right dog when we met.

Please also check www.petfinder.com

They have alot of wonderful pets that need homes, we got our last sweet little kitty from them. The foster parents do such a wonderful job with them but they have so many pets that need homes.

www.dogster.com also has animals you can adopt but I have never used this service.

I agree with all of the above and have to tell you there is no such thing as a free dog. You will have vet cost and heartworm/flea cost for every dog. I will suggest you check out the SPCA in Tampa, not sure if there is one in Ft. Myers but if they don't have what you are looking for they will call you if they get one. There is a fee for neutering the dog but it is much less than having a vet do it. You want to be sure they have been tested for heartworms too. If they are positive it cost a bundle in FL to get them treated.

I have 2 wonderful dogs I got one from the animal control here and the other from a rescue group. Some rescue groups also list the dogs temperment which is important. Check out petfinder.com and put in your Zip code and if you are looking for female, small, and baby/young/senior you can find all the ones that meet your criteria. Let us know...
