i have to admit, i used to be prejudiced against little dogs. i felt like they were too foo foo and not real dogs. but when i got my own (not little) dog, and started hanging out at the dog park and meeting more dogs, i realized more and more that little dogs, even the super fluffy ones, are just as doggy as anybody else! the contrast between the fluffy cuteness and fierce/gross/rough & tumble doggie behavior is actually really hilarious.
Thx for copping to that. I never had my own "little" dogs until recently. I had only been owned by a larger dog and the one "little" dog we had for a short time as a kid did not live up to my expectations, but that was because of poor training and someone elses fault, plus I got bit by a yapper once for no reason other than walking by a house.
Now that I have a Pom and a Yorkie, I totally adore the little guys. They are real dogs and much easier to lift, but I love all dogs!
I am mamma/mommy to all 4 of my fur babies and DH it daddy. We do not have kids then but when we do DH says then they are just petss because he does not want our kids to think they have 3 dogs and a cat as siblings. We'll see about that
I occassionally call my Alaskan Husky a "fur ball", or "snuggle-puppy", and I often refer to my Mastiff as "the monster mouse masher" or "foot-warmer", but I have never called them "my kids" nor do I consider myself their "parent."
I like to call my dogs "my pets" because it's apparently politically correct. I do think of them, the group, as my family. But if someone says, "They're like your kids," I say, "No, I LIKE them. They don't get pregnant, wreck the car, go to college, plus, they guard the house."
(I am childfree by choice and honestly don't like the idea that I have dogs *instead* of kids).
They are most certainly not companion animals, after all, I pay the bills. They certainly make my house a home.
