We've had Bigun to the vet in Indianapolis, Elgin (IL), Escanaba (MI), and Duluth. His feces has been floated, and examined under a slide. Unfortunately, the diarrhea persists. The last two vets said they saw tiny, white eggs that she could not identify. Both wondered if he might have a parasite that was indigenous to his place of birth-- Tennessee.

Can anyone tell me of any parasite that would leave tiny, white eggs in the canine feces that would resist treatments that include the following?:

Metronidazole (250 mg) -- three separate prescriptions
Drontal Plus (22.7 mg) -- one time
Panacur Granules (9 gr) -- two, three-day treatments
Virbantel Chewable (small) -- two tablets, one time
Albon 250 mg/5ml -- seven days, once a day

In all respects other than his elimination, he appears healthy and is a very happy, energetic pup. He's gained 30% of his starting weight, and he is not dehydrated.

The last vet mentioned that if it wasn't a parasite, there could be a more serious problem. She didn't say what that might be, but I am concerned.

Any help you might offer would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

feed the dog either chicken or hamburg with rice boiled. Or baby food and rice warm.
give water and see if this helps. I also was told baby immodiam etc was ok for short term use? Maybe fleas which have worms but a vet should know this?

Lookin' I'm sorry to hear that both you and the little guy are going through this. You may have already tried these but it's all I can think of. Plain pumpkin, probiotics to restore his gut and maybe go to a single brand of bottled spring water that doesn't have any of the chemicals that treated city water would have?

I sure hope this resolves soon and he's back in good health.

Thanks, Zugor, and -- yep, been there, too. All the home remedies that I could find have been tried. I was hoping someone might have some prior experience, and could say something like: "My Fifi had similar symptoms, and the vet prescribed XYZ, and it was cleared up."

Looks like I need to prepare myself for some scarier options.

This may be a long shot and Im not sure of his breed or age but maybe would contact the breeder (if you got him from one) and give them the low-down (no blame) but would ask if they know about any similar problems w/ his littermates?

Hi LookinForMayberry,

When you say "diarrhea", what exactly do you mean? Is Bigun's stool just soft, or is it watery?

Artie had chronic soft stool until I discovered that he was grain intolerant and got him on grain-free food.

Even after that, it was not as firm as it "should" have been so the vet had me add a teaspoon of Metamucil to each of his meals, which seems to work the opposite for dogs (firming) as it does for humans (loosening).

And, sometimes still it's a bit softer than I'd like, and so I give him some cheese which really does the trick.

Of course, if you're talking about a watery mess, it's a whole other issue, but if it's "just" soft poop, I wonder if Bigun is grain intolerant (as a first course of action) and if, maybe, Metamucil and/or cheese would do the trick.

Where in TN, OP?

Thinking along the lines of something that might exist in one area but not another, TN wouldn't qualify for the weird and wonderful tropical parasites because it gets too cold. But the one thing TN has, and plenty of them, are rivers... so could you be looking at some sort of water-born parasite? A long shot perhaps, but it's just a thought you could research.

On the other front, the homeopathic remedy of slippery elm might help firm things up until you get to the bottom (pardon the pun) of this. You can get it as a powder you simply sprinkle on his food.

Middle TN, 2 hours SE of Nashville.

I'm wondering if dogs also get IBS?? Although I guess that doesn't explain the eggs.....

Let me call the other adopters and see if they're having any problems like this with theirs. Though the last two to be adopted out weren't having problems. *scratches head*

You never said what you feed your puppy. That is where I would start. 90%+ of all allergies and waste-related problems can be traced back to the dog's diet. Also, regularly switching between different types of food (even excellent dog food) will also cause diarrhea or loose stools.
