I got a notice in the mail that Duke is due for his 4th booster DA2PPV. With my other dog who was a puppy when we got her we only did 3 boosters with a different vet. Is this optional or does he need the 4th booster?

Usually, the last vac for a puppy is the one yr. Rabies.

It's not a matter of how many boosters a puppy gets, it's a matter of timing. Maternal antibodies interfere with the vaccines, but there's no way to tell exactly when the antibodies wear off as it varies from puppy to puppy. The distemper combo needs an initial administration and at least one booster to be effective. That's why vaccine protocols call for puppies to be vaccinated every 3-4 weeks starting around 8 weeks and with the last being at or after 12 weeks of age.
The puppy needs to be at least 12 weeks old to get the rabies vaccine, so that one and the last distemper combo often go together.

You'll be getting plenty more of these notices, since there is money to be made off your dog. Read up on this site and make an informed decision regarding your dog's health and well-being. :-)

At 8 mos, he should have been done. Unless you lapsed in the timing and they needed to start over. Check your records for the timing of his vacs.

I agree with ShelbyGirl1. If he was 8 months at his last booster and the previous one was 3 to 4 weeks before it, then you shouldn't need another distemper combo for at least a year.
