I have had both leather sofas and microfiber. I would now choose microfiber every time. I have a nice comfy reclining sofa and I love the feel of the microfiber and have had no trouble with it. ( maybe I just got lucky and the fabric is good) leather bothers me, I tend to slide on it. anyway, both of the boys seem to like the sofa:

heavy durable fabric, you will just have to go into furniture stores and see what they have look at swatches because it depends on if your dogs have light fur and or dark fur short or long hair etc, they will also be better able to point you in the right direction as far as fabric choice, durability and stain resistance.

Leather is just so ugly, I can't imagine having leather couches or chairs. It's cold in the winter, sticky in the summer, slippery, and not at all comfy. I guess you have to really like the look to settle for it. To each his own. We always buy couches with a plush fabric for our cats and dogs, and often use washable slipcovers. We've had pets over 20 years and it's worked for us.

Very happy with chocolate brown microfiber suede (which we had pre-dog), because it washes well, does not show stains, vacuums easily, and isn't prohibitively expensive if there is any destruction.

Leather furniture isn't my thing.

Top Grain Leather is very dog friendly......I was afraid about scratches....one of our dog has really strong nails.....the sofa seems to be very resilient....not a single scratch or blemish....the other dog is a real nester....but when on the leather....she doesnt do that.

From what the sales lady told me.....top grain is the strongest.....I didnt know that they split a hide and get three layers and the second and bottom are less strong.

Contrary to some peoples opinion....the leather couch is the coolest seat in the house in the summer.....the dogs tend to gravitate to it like they do to the tile floor in the mud room.....and in the winter it is warm ..... I love it. Perhaps some people would prefer an artificial synthetic fabric......but I am enjoying the leather couch......and it is beautiful.

We have dogs, cats and kids. Electrified steel mesh covered in a Kevlar-type material sounds good too.

Not only is there split leather, but more recently, there's also "bonded leather".

Fancy name for scrap, though, because indeed that is what it is. It's the scraps of leather that's blended with polyurethane to offer an appearance of leather, but with none of the durability, as the surface is all plastic.
