This is one of many discussions about dog eye contact. It's on a fox terrier site, but applies to all dogs: Animal Communications - Fox Terrier Network - Wire Fox Terriers and Smooth Fox Terriers Club, Education, Resources, Information, Dog Training, Obedience, Behavior, Photo contest (http://www.foxterrier.com/natural/communication.php - broken link)

Viralmd you are so right on the eye contact - one explanation for some dogs' hesitance with dark skinned people if not used to them is the contrast between the eyes and the face and the teeth and the face - both threat signals.

I know from hiding for a lot of SAR dogs in training that if you are downwind from them in a good breeze, you can be sitting in an open field perfectly still and the dog won't notice you until he is right on top of you UNLESS you make eye contact. It is funny to see the dog working the area, get to where you are just upwind and do a double take. If the dog can smell you the game is over. If the dog sees your eyes it is over.
