I think it's a terrible idea.  It will encourage people who don't want pets to get pets.  They won't be treated well, and they'll just end up displaced again.

It's different when you are writing off a pet you love as legitimate business expense. Since my husband has a career that could justify it, I've entertained the idea once or twice. I'm too lazy about record keeping to bother though.
If you read the article, the proposed tax break is meant to promote and encourage pet ownership. I think that's a bad reason to create a tax when there are so many unwanted animals. The last thing animal lovers should want is more people buying animals they don't love just for a tax break.

I am not good at bookkeeping either. It is SO easy now. Just pay for everything deductible with a business credit card. Of course, pay the full balance each month. At tax time I just get my records on the net, the card site sorts it all out for me.
