dog and cats sometimes spit up yellow bile
it's not vomit, there is always food and water available but sometime - say once every 2 weeks one or all will spit up yellow bile. no other health problems. they aren't getting into anything.
What's up with that?

My dog would do this all the time when he was refusing to eat the proplan I had out for him.
It only happened when he had an empty stomache for an extended amount of time. I think the yellow bile is proof your dogs stomach is empty. Is he eating properly? How do you feed him (free feed, or do you give him/her a certain amount of food at certain times of the day?) . I corrected this problem by changing my dogs food (he just wouldn't eat the proplan), and making sure he ate right before bed time. This would only happen 1st thing in the morning for him. When he had not eaten for 10 or more hours..!

My male Lhasa has done this since puppyhood, he's 13 yo. Sometimes it's bile, sometimes food. Usually he begins to retch, which allows me time to grab a towel to put under him, sometimes he's quicker. No vet has ever been able to diagnose why. He was on some drug, can't remember the name right now, like Flavix something or another--for a long time. It did seem to help, but then he began again while on the drug, so I discontinued it. For a while he was okay, maybe throw up every now and then. However, lately, as he's aged he back to throwing up more frequently, almost every day. It doesn't matter if he ate or not, he just upchucks. Other than his throw-up espisodes, his vet exams are fine. He's my throw-up kid, but don't get me started on his sister...entirely different orifice involved there.

Mine does this sometimes. Never took him to the vets. He's lived through it for 14 years. Must not be anything important.
It's just bile. Like when humans get indigestion and bile comes up in our mouths.
Take them to the vet. If everything is fine at the exam, don't worry about it.

Both of mine have done this all their life. When one of mine was a puppy and she would eat anything she came across, this was more of an issue. I don't know of any reason to be concerned unless it is happing every day, or if the dog seems listless, is not drinking water, etc. Then, you should contact your vet. My question is - why do my dogs always need to vomit between 4 & 5 a.m?????? They never have this issue during the daytime. Luckily, I wake up 99% of the time to hear them licking their lips alot, and I am able to get them to the tile floor before it happens. Of course, after they get sick, they jump right back in bed and go back to sleep. Mom (Dad never seems to hear the commotion - hmmmm) has to clean it up and then try to go back to sleep

my bichon also did that mostly in the am b4 she ate. First time she did it I brought her to the
vet who said some dogs do that when they have no food in the stomach. She whould eat real fast
and then spit up her dog food and try to eat it then. I was told not to worry over it-The yellow bile also is hard to clean off carpet!

My dogs did it to! I figured its part of being a dog as they reguratate their food for the pups to eat. Not like Acid reflex in Humans. Cause I dont think their acid burns like ours does. IF it did they wouldnt do it!
