In the never-ending anal sacs saga...
Artie is having his expressed AGAIN. Tomorrow morning at 9am. Good thing that it's Yom Kippur and that I'll be fasting because the smell of those anal sacs when they're full make me want to vomit. Although, since they'll be expressed at 9am, I should have my appetite back by 9.30, and will still have to fast all day.
At least all I have to do is fast. Artie, however, has to get his bum "massaged" -- something that he's NOT a fan of.

I'd like to thank you for reminding me of what my dear sweet Sheba's anal sacs smell like....

Yeah. Me neither.
I'm already stressed about it. He has to be dragged into the room to have it done and it breaks my heart. Then he comes out all smiling, so *something* went right in the end (no pun intended).

You're gonna PAY them for what they just did to me?!?!??!??!??!?!?!?!
Oh! My friend's female Lab did what I thought was the bum scootch and when I told him what I thought he saw, he asked me if female dogs "get that problem" -- if they have anal sacs. I told him that I didn't think that anal sacs were gender-dependent. (But I wasn't sure.) Thanks for letting me in on this bit of biology/physiology so that he can keep an eye on her and her bum.

This may be a silly question but do all dogs need to get their anal sacs expressed? I had two female dogs growing up and don't remember ever having to bring them to the vet for that and we've had Sydney now for about 4 months and he hasn't had that done but he hasn't scooted and been to the vet twice..just curious

Absolutely not. Not all dogs need to get it done -- in fact, the majority (I'm guessing) do not ever have to have it done.
Dog express them on their own. This is typically done by having firm poops that press against the anal glands, thus excreting the glands "organically," so to speak.
My dog has a history of soft-ish poop, so...
Even dogs that typically have firm poops have problems, sometimes, though, and this occurs when their anal sacs are positioned a bit further apart.
But don't worry if Sydney NEVER has to have it done -- just count yourself lucky. Or among the majority.
