from an email i received this morninng from the missouri humane society:

Noting the "torture" inflicted by people "who train dogs to maim other dogs because that's where the money is," today the Honorable Carol E. Jackson, United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Missouri, sentenced four of the defendants in the largest dog fighting case in U.S. history to terms in federal prison ranging from 12 months and one day to 18 months. Judge Jackson stated the crimes these defendants committed rose to the level of "extraordinary cruelty" warranting sentences which would be a "deterrence to the defendants and the community."

Although these sentences exceed current federal sentencing guidelines and we applaud Judge Jackson for imposing them, we at the Humane Society of Missouri believe federal and state dog fighting penalties and sentences should be strengthened to reflect the very serious nature of this heinous crime. In the coming weeks and months, we will be working to help convince those responsible to improve the sentencing guidelines and to increase the penalties for dog fighting, both on the federal and state levels.

looks like fay, the poor girl whose lips are gone, likely lost in a fight, is turning into the poster girl for these dogs.........

I really want to know when those in Congress are going to realize that people who abuse animals are violent offenders who usually end up committing crimes against humans (especially women and children)? Perhaps then they would care about what happens to these animals who are victimized.

I agree - the penalty should be greater.

You're right, it does lead to community /domestic violence. But for some reason the people making and enforcing the laws can't seem to equate that.

This makes no sense. Authorities can't enforce non-existent laws.

Laws are signed into being by VOTERS. People who enforce laws can't just make laws up - they enforce LAWS which have been voted in, by voters.

No one gets away scott free, blaming the authorities...do your part to ensure anti-cruelty laws are passed.

God bless Judge Jackson. But even she is hindered as far as how much time she can impose on these cretins. Just a lil bit o' justice, LTTP, but for those of us who love animals, it will never be over.

This is a great point. But how do we get the laws changed. I know that in Europe, animal welfare groups have massive internet petitions that actually do change those laws. Do you think that would work? Or should people write letters to their reps?

Nope. Not until it affects them in some way or another, but then, that's usually the way it goes. Sad, but true.

LTTP...

Did you see on the news last week the GUILTY male that is from Foley/Winfield...held his head down in SHAME...an his lawyer spoke for him saying..."He is sooooo sorry" Yea right...soooory he got caught. The day his sentence was read.... when Hubby drove by his house, there were many people there, looked like they were moving things out. Not sure. I think his whole family should go to jail. They all knew what was going on.
Just makes my blood boil......
