Do you think its right to keep a dog in a crate for 10 hours a day and then let them out for about 4 hours and put them back in the crate for another 8 hours or so, doing this for 5-6 days a week?

No. I don't think it's right at all.
Honestly, although I know that many people do it, I find it to be awful. I question why they have a dog in the first place, actually. It's not fair to the dog, in my opinion.
I only did it in the beginning of getting my dog until I could find an arrangement. Now my parents dog sit my dog while I work. I drop him off in the morning and pick him up in the afternoon or my hubby (we take turns).

I'd like to add to my original response:
Even if not in a crate, I don't think it's right to leave a dog unattended for 10 hours straight. I can't hold my pee for 10 hours, so I don't expect my dog to do that either.

I think it is cruel too. I babysat for a couple who put their dog in the crate when they left for work before 7 and did get home from work until 6 or 7. If I babysat for them at night the poor dog was put back in the crate. It was soo sad.
I feel bad leaving my dog in the crate for 4 hours and she is 5 or 6 yo.
My hours are similar to those mentioned from the OP--gone 10 hours, home 4, asleep 8. However, Beesley has the whole kitchen to roam around in, his comfy bed, some blankets, his water bowl and toys to play with while I'm gone. Of course I feel bad for being gone for so long during the day, but I think Beesley likes when I'm gone sometimes

i did crate bailey while i was at work for about the first month i had her.... she was 4 months old when she joined our family...... but she HATED it.... and towards the end of this time, i would have to force her bodily into it ..... ..... she had a nice comfy bed, a couple of toys and chews and a kong.... but she was not a happy puppy......
so, i spent that weekend leaving her alone loose in the house for progressively longer periods of time and she was just fine.... and has been ever since..... i can only imagine what the neighbors must have thought seeing me come and go, come and go, come and go about 27 times over those 2-1/2 days..... i'll admit i was nervous for her (and for me) that next week while at work, but she was a little rock star at 5 months old......
