Default Getting older pets fixed, Please read...

Hello everyone! I was wondering if having my year and a half old Male dog fixed will change his temperment and "bad habits". The peeing on EVERYTHING, his aggresive attitude at times and so on. My friend says it is to late and he will continue with all these issues and will continue to pee in the exact same spots even after he is fixed. Any ideas or experiance with older pets getting fixed?? He is a Boxer by the way..

I got Buster fixed at a year and a half and he calmed down a little bit. Not as much as I was expecting, he still likes to challenge me and he still has attitude but it's a lot better than it use to be. On the other hand my female was fixed at 6 mo. and she's quiet, rarely barks, and listens better than he does. I would get him fixed regardless of the fact that he's a year and a half and also do a refresher course on the training.

Have him fixed now. My ten year old wasn't fixed because he had been shown for years. After I retired him I figured it wouldn't be necessary to neuter him at that point. That was 3 years ago. Two weeks ago I had to have him neutered at the ripe old age of ten. He developed a large tumor. It was horrible. The neutering appeared to go well, then he got an infection, So last saturday he went back for emergency surgery to clean out the infection and remove the scr****. He is in so much misery. This morning he has started to perk up. I have always fixed every animal that was not intended to be shown. In the future, any dog that has been shown and I deem not suitable to be bred will be neutered immediately. Waiting till they are elderly is too much of a risk. Also if your dog is a pet, it does make them easier to live with. you may not notice this right away. It comes on slowly. They won't change overnight.

yes.... he should be fixed ASAP

and invest in a big ol' jug of nature's miracle (can get it from petco or petsmart) and clean every single spot he has even THOUGHT about peeing on with it....... it will eliminate the urine scent and reduce temptation to pee there again.......

It might help the marking. MIGHT. By now it's an ingrained habit and very tough to break. It won't change his aggressiveness.

And it takes approximately ONE MONTH for the hormone levels to decrease.

Hi Allison,

After you get him neutered (yeah, you should... unwanted pregnancies, etc...), get yourself a bottle of Nature's Miracle spray. Shpritz it on the areas where your guy has peed/marked. This will stop it from smelling (and staining, by the way) -- even if you can't smell it, he can... and so he thinks it's OK to continue peeing there.

Get him fixed but his peeing on everything is an obedience issue not a sex issue. I have had intact male dogs before, have one now, and this has never been a problem for us.
