My nine year old lab mix seems to have started his own bathroom schedule. For the past couple of months he will only go poop at 3am. He cries and runs around begging for us to take him out. During the day he refuses to go out and lowers his head and lays down when we ask him. Sometimes he will just go out our back door to pee and then come right back in. We tried feeding him earlier thinking it will go through his system earlier, but it hasn't worked. He does get scared of loud noises so it could be that he wants to wait until it is really quiet outside.
Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas of how to resolve this?

Feed him later or earlier. I would suggest later...pushing the "movement" to a more reasonable time of the morning.

I have no good answer but the title made me crack up! I hope you figure it out. maybe push him back ten minutes every day until you get a time you like.

My sister's chihuahua does the same thing!! Around 3 or 4 in the am. She deals with it though. I never thought of changing his feeding time! Good Luck!

bailey wakes me up between 2 and 3 in the morning for a potty break about half of the time..... she jumps down off the bed, sits down next to it and whines at me until i wake up......i think she just wakes up for some reason and wants to go out for a minute....more from boredom or something to do..... but, i am glad she DOES do this.... prefer her letting me know and losing the 10-15 minutes sleep to her being miserable until it is time to get up or worse.....

If you follow the housebreaking routine from Viralmd, you can re-train him to go when you are outside with him at a better time. But you have to go outside with him.

This is crucial at my house. Shadow will not go if she is unattended. Unless she is in great distress she will not go in her own yard and most BMs happen while we are out for a walk.

Good point about going outside with the dog...OP, do you usually let the dog out by himself? That could definitely be part of the problem!

You could also try a product called "rescue remedy" if you think it's anxiety-related...chamomile is also good for anxiety, and quite a bit cheaper.

Good luck!!!

That son-of-a-b*tch!!!

I wouldn't go for that. I mean I would send him out and tell him to go. I would stand on the porch till he went.

You are allowing him to control you. WTH!

Food or no food he is pooping before I get in bed.
