The continued best to you and Artie - just remember to end those sessions on a positive note. If Artie is struggling to 'get' a particular lesson, before you end on that note - go back to something he does well, issue the command, mark, reward, release and call it a day there - and don't train with Artie when you are tired, sick, stressed, or having a bad day....if your heart isn't in it - wait a day....Artie deserves for you to be spot on for him - like he is for you
What's interesting is that he's NOT typically food-motivated but there are SOME treats that are irrestistible for him.

The ones I'm using are these tiny organic chicken "training treats" by Zukes. He only get those while we're "working" so that he doesn't get bored with them.

Thanks for the "end on a positive note" information (good to know; I didn't) and also about wanting to be "on" for Artie (another good point; thank you).

Thanks!!!

That's the trick - off the chart tasty treats for training - always And once you find one that works - only use that treat when you are seriously training - save the hot dog slices and cheese bites for casual stuff like sitting nicely in the kitchen, waiting at a door, etc....pretty soon Artie-smartie will associate those training treats for times when he needs to demonstrate how very smart he is and how well he knows 'his stuff'.

We use calf liver (stinky stuff - but it's .99/lb at the meat market) that I boil with some various garlic, celery, etc....then pat dry, cut into small cubes and my guy pretty much is willing to learn whatever I can honestly teach him (These treats freeze well and defrost fast....and I defrost just enough for what we're working on.....)

We also have good luck with a silly treat I make with pureed pumpkin, cream of wheat and powdered milk......as basic as that sounds - my training buddy LOVES them! Maybe because that's the only time he gets them

Dawn, what's the name of this DVD? If you have good success with Artie, which it sounds like you already are after one lesson, I might be interested in trying it out with Buster and Bella. I cannot walk these two together because I get walked lol and now that Josh is coming home I'd like to be able to have nice walks with both of them as well as them behaving better in the house (ie: not jumping on the window when a squirrel runs by lol)

Sounds like Artie is doing great

Rottnboys: I've got to pass on the liver -- my hands are stinky enough from these chicken things.

Jaime: It's called Perfect Paws in 5 Days. I got it directly from Jean Donaldson's website (Perfect Paws in 5 days - Perfect Paws Company LLC) because it was the cheapest there, from what I could find. It was recommended to me by World Citizen and it's fabulous. We're not doing it in five days, though. I want to stretch it over five WEEKS. We're going to do one lesson per weekend, and PRACTICE it over the course of the week. Although the first (and only lesson) we've done so far is to sit/down/stay, I'm able to incorporate it on my walks, which is GREAT!!!! As I mentioned, Artie is already (after just one day!!!) at the point where he's walking right next to me, looking up at me, anticipating his next treat. I don't make him sit -- there are huge puddles -- but I'm treating him because he's right there next to me. That was my goal -- to have him beside me, and that's what he's doing, so... TREATS! Granted, it was raining today, not many people were out, so there were very few distractions -- that's going to be trickier -- but it's really effective as long as I'm using VERY high-value treats that he ONLY gets while training/walking.

maciesmom: Thanks!!! from both of us.

hhhmmmmm .... as much as i DESPISE liver, may have to investigate it for training treats.... LOVE the idea of a particular treat associated ONLY with training..... and liver has a pretty distinct odor..... even to our human noses.....

such wise folks we have here......

Artie sounds like Dash watching you on walks just waiting for that next treat. Dash knew I had treats in my pocket so he kept an eye on me and when he finally relaxed and took that eye off me is when I would ask for something of him! My favorite was when they were out on a flexi and mine is a 26 ft and sniffing along in the field I would stop without saying a word. When they would realize I had stopped their job was to come back to me and sit in front of me without me calling or tugging on the leash. It helps teach them to keep focus on you. The minute Dash would realize I had stopped he would look at Jazz and together they would look back at me and as they raced back you could see him thinking "Oh boy I am going to get a treat!!!!" His expression was just so priceless.

I am so glad to hear that you are having fun on the walks as that makes them that much more special for both you and Artie. Keep up the good work

Yeah LOVE of food! There is one thing that Dash did love more then he loved me and that was food. You could get that boy to do ANYTHING for a treat. It worked to my great advantge in fixing the behavior problems he came with but I know I was just lucky some bad guy didn't offer him a treat for me as he would have handed me over ! Not so with Jazz I am above treats for her so at least she would have saved me, funny girl will not take treats from someone she does not know. If the clerk at the petstore hands her a snack she will take it as she is polite then spit it out and leave it. It is not that the snack is not good as if I then pick it up and give it to her she will then eat it. I guess her real momma told her not to take " candy" from strangers.
