If he can prescribe it... surely he must be able to buy it? (If you see what I mean, that's not very well phrased. )

But there is - I only just learned of it, but there's a charity that does just that. AFAIK, the drugs can't be used here in the US, but they send container loads overseas to be used for things like free clinics in the third world, disasters, etc. etc.

I have a 7-year-old chocolate lab who is in kidney failure and has been prescribed Procrit 3 times per week. One month of this medication at Auburn University Small Animal Hospital is $1,600.00 I had to take out a loan to buy one month's worth, but I would lay down my life for Molly, my lab, since she has gotten me through so many traumatic events in my life and has never left my side for one second. It's as if she's human and is like my child. I think it's a terrible shame to charge the owners of these devastatingly sick animals such outrageous prices at such vulnerable times.

To some who may read this, you may judge me as being a foolish, naive human being who would take out a loan for a dog. If you could just walk in my shoes for five minutes, you would understand. When she looks at me with those golden, pleading eyes with her tail wagging, knowing that she must be miserable, I would do anything in this world for her. She got me through the loss of my daughter by her mere presence and unbelievable devotion, as if she knew the pain and suffering I was going through. Hard to believe or understand, I know, but only God knows what compassion and perception these very special, loving creatures were blessed with. Please pray for Molly, the love of my life.

Oh, Barbara, like Late to the Party said, most of us understand and would do the same thing that you're doing. Our dogs are like gifts for the heart and we treat them as such.

Hugs to you and to Miss Molly. I hope that Molly gives you many more years of love, as you will give to her.
