We just got a beagle puppy yesterday. We can't decide what to name him- Copper or Buddy?
Buddy was my childhood dog. He died after a long battle with cancer. Part of me wants to name our new pup after the greatest dog ever, but it doesn't feel right.
I named my Dave for my friend's dearly departed, but much loved black lab.... i think it is an honor to the "first" dog.......
and i will ALWAYS have a pet named Charlie...... for a dear dear friend of my mom's who used to joke that when he died, he wanted to come back as one of my pets.......
I have several dogs I 'officially' named, but over time they sort of developed other names that I began calling them. Like Sydney became "Pooh" because she started to remind me of Winnie the Pooh and called her Syd and Pooh and Valentine (who was born on Valentine's Day) became Nugget because she was small and the color of a chicken mcnugget. Another one I got as a pup I was unsure what to name her and kept calling her Tiny which became Nee-Nee which officially became Nina, but I call her both Nina and Ni Ni. You get the idea. Just see what rolls off the tounge whenever you see him bounding your way or if you pick up a character trait that gives him his name. They have a way of telling us what their name is. I do like Cooper because it is not as common as Buddy, but you may officially name him Cooper then find yourself calling him Buddy.
Our beagle mix is Willie, but he came close to being Sam. He had been Noah at the refuge, but I wasn't feeling it. If he's particularly hound-y, I would go with Copper (love that movie!). Nothing wrong with Cooper, but among our acquaintances, it's the "Jacob" (currently #1 human boy name for 2010, acc. to the SSA) of dog names right now. My brother has a Cooper, my SO's brother has a Cooper, two people I work with have Coopers, etc.
