Update - As my dogs are over 100lbs (including the weight of the travel crates) we will not be able to check them as baggage. So we contacted AA to see if we could ship them as cargo, but I received an email stating that the rules were changed last year & individuals could no longer check animals in as cargo themselves, that we will have to go through a 3rd party company. So basically it's back to square one again and finding the best (and cheapest) company to ship our pets with!

Thankfully we don't have to fly until Jan/Feb next year so we've got time to shop around & get the best price :]

You might have better luck if you break the trip into two legs. Try and get the shortest flight to the US so the pet is couped up the least. Once in Boston, NYC, etc, it would be easier to get a flight to TX with the dog as individual cargo. It won't be too bad on the dog neither to get a chance to take two shorter flights with a nice stop-over to relieve itself and stretch the legs, instead of one long flight. You also open up a whole world of options once in the US.
