Well to be honest, I am trying to get Cane adopted now. My sister's friend really wanted a blue pitty, but I'm trying to talk him into this little guy instead. We'll see.
Sometimes in the rescue business, a certain dog will reach out to you and you feel compelled to try to save that one. The sad fact of the matter is that no, we can't save them all, but until you've been a part of rescuing animals it's hard to explain. And, you shouldn't assume that people aren't trying to help out the other dogs either. You also have to take into consideration adoptability when agreeing to foster a rescued dog. Some dogs will be easier to adopt out than others, and that was part of the reason why I was going to try to get my BIL to foster that lab. My sister routinely pulls highly adoptable dogs that test heartworm positive and are slated to be euthanized. She pays for their treatment and fosters them until they are able to be adopted out. She's successfully adopted out 3 of those and is currently fostering another chihuahua until she can find him a permanent home. You can see him here.
Honestly though, people in this business would love to help each and every animal possible, so to ask why nobody is stepping up for the other dogs is like a slap in the face to someone to really DOES want to save them all.
He must have. Shelter worker didn't go into specifics, just that he was claimed by his owner. It appeared the shelter worker was quite embarrassed for not getting him offline over the weekend. She said she had more than 7 inquires via e-mail about him this morning.
Out of the 7 dogs shown online for this shelter they were all posted to be destroyed tommorrow. She said she had someone coming to get several of the others as well.
All's well that ends well. Next time I will call the shelter first before being so hasty and putting so many people of good will into motion. So sorry that this was a false alarm but I'm happy for the pup that he is home.
sheeeww.... so GLAD to hear that..... i am having serious computer problems with the work 'puter today..... and was worried about getting those other contacts to you......
and not to worry about getting us all excited.....
starla, whatyousay is right ..... sometimes a dog i am transporting just reaches out and crawls right into my heart..... all within a split second.... not saying that all of the others are any less important in the least..... its just that every now and then, one REALLY speaks to the heart.....
can't think of any better way to describe it as it really is an indescribable feeling......

Thank you for that whatyoursay and latetotheparty. Yes, that lab in particular touched my heart very much. I did not know how to reply because one thing I appreciate about the pets section of this forum over all others is that it seems to be void of personal attacks and an area where courtesy and respect for others are paramount.
whatyousay, that is terrific that you may be able to help with one of the other dogs! Wow, kudos!
Of the 3 dogs I have owned in my adult life, 2 have been rescued from near certain euthanasia death; one via a shelter, the other the owner was going to drown it. I will rescue again; no doubt about that. My senior lab is keeping me from doing that at this time because of his health and the attention he requires. I have to be fair to him during the time he has left. Losing his "brother" a rescued ESS last year to lymphoma nearly killed me. He was one of those special rescues that stole my heart.
These are the warm & fuzzy feelings that make you feel so good.
Thank goodness he found his way back to his home. Being so young...I bet he got loose.
GREAT job everyone...
What about all of the other animals that are still in urgent need of homes? Why was it so important for you to rescue this particular dog but not others like him? B/c you love labs?!
This sounds accusatory. Am I misreading the tone of this post?
When I search Petfinders, I'm certainly not searching for breeds I don't like, which can be defined as the small, yappy breeds. My searches will result in Labs, APBTs, Dobermans, Dogos, etc. I can't remember the last time I searched for available Shih Tzus. Or cats.
By drawing attention to this one particular dog, the OP has certainly done more than I've done lately to help save the life of a dog.

Well, I tried, but he really wants a blue pittie. But, the good news is that I found this one and we've gotten the rescue organization paperwork faxed over to have her spayed and ready for pick up hopefully this weekend! I'm really excited because this poor baby has been sitting in this shelter since October!! Thankfully, it's a no-kill shelter.

And to top it off, I may have also found a home for this collie as well who is currently at a shelter near me. A different person had been looking for a tri-color adult collie, so I'm hoping she likes this one! There's a video on him, he seems so sweet!
So, hopefully if all goes well, I'll be driving down to central Illinois this weekend to pick up the pittie from Macon County Animal Control.
Latetotheparty ~ if you have any need for a transport going from Decatur, IL up to the Chicago area this weekend, let me know and maybe they can hitch a ride with me.
I just want to say thanks to all of you that do rescues. What you all do is wonderful and the rewards you get must be wonderful.
Bless you all!
