We started out by just hanging the bell near a central doorway. Our is in the dinging room (center of the house)
Then everytime we took one out, we stopped at the bell and rang it. Then we started touching their noses to it. all the while saying "Out? Ring the Bell!"
It wasn't long and both dogs were ringing the bell... the main thing is doing the same thing over and over and never varying the words or the resulting trip outside.
good luck!
PS... Elvis learned it when I moved here... He was already over a year old...!
Molly had a big vocabulary of grunts and other weird sounds. We loved to ask her opinions on things because she always responded. It was our fault that we couldn't always understand her. She tried hard enough.
She also had a lot of health problems. She was a frequent visitor to the Vet and she dearly loved seeing him because he usually made her feel better. One day, she seemed to be in a lot of pain. I asked her, "Do you want to go see your doctor?" She got out of her bed and slowly walked to the door and stared at the door knob. I couldn't disappoint her, but the vet didn't open for another hour or so. So I put her in the car and drove s-l-o-w-l-y. When we got to the corner where I was supposed to turn, I went the other way. She pitched a hissy fit, started barking and pawing at my arm. This went on until I turned around and headed in the right direction. She was even content to sit in the parking lot and wait until the office opened. She would march herself up to the door to the examing rooms and scratch to get in.
I miss her so much even though she considered herself my husband's dog.
