I'm sure our dog does. If he doesn't, I don't really want to know.

Yes the most certainly do! My younger dog comes and sits between my legs. That's the sign for me to cuddle and kiss him. Sometimes he throws himself down for the tummy rub!

My old dog is smaller and always had to be by us and was a licking machine. He still is but not as much. He still loves to be cuddled mostly now because I think he feels safe. Lots of health issues with him.

Even my cat will come up and push her head into my hand for pets. She's also a kneading machine and seems to like to have her paw on us most of the time.

They know.

I'll go with "extremely fond of". I don't think she'd be a wreck if I disappeared like I would be if she did.

Yes, they do. My old girl did a huge dance-wiggle with every fiber of her being involved, every time I'd come back into the house. I'd hear the thump of her paws as she jumped down off the couch or bed and raced to the top of the stairs the minute she heard that downstairs door open - and when I started walking up the stairs to her bouncing, she would flash the biggest toothy grin. Every time - even if I'd only been gone a few minutes. Many times a day, for 13 years.

My little rescue dances enthusiastically and will even do a little leap in the air with an occasional kick out of joy when I've been gone awhile or whenever she is excited (and that cherished howl - roo, roo, rooooooo) And every time I pass through whichever room she is in inside the house, I heard the thump, thump, thump of "hey, glad to see you!". She didn't do these things when she first arrived; it was in the weeks and months thereafter as she got to know us, and we got to know her, and we both decided we were the luckiest humans and dog on the planet for having found her.

And those are just two examples, out of the many I have from all the dogs I've loved and who've loved me back. Dogs only give back to you what you give out to them. I know people whose dogs don't behave this way to them - these are people who enjoy their dogs but just don't expect deep emotions or much intelligence from the dog, or really believe that dogs are capable of expressing so many things. And voila, the dog doesn't offer much more to them than what they expect - coincidence? I think not.

I wonder if the dogs figure that if the human isn't open to this kind of thing, why bother? I say to doubters, be open to what your dog is capable of expressing, and they will probably pleasantly surprise you with their new responses!

Yes, our dogs know/understand affection, commitment (loyalty) and love. They recognize different people whom they have met before, even more than a year before, who were kind or unkinds to them and react accordingly.

Driller1, is it possible your hubby read about the poll where more than 1/3 of wives stated they'd rather talk to their dogs than husbands when he stated to you that dogs "have no idea" ?
