Fun Family things to do in Duluth
We're headed up to Duluth for a fun family weekend and since we haven't been there before I'm wondering what would be fun for the kids (8 & 4 years old). Good restaurants too. Moderately priced ones that are kid friendly. Thanks!

It depends on how old your kids are. You can take a boat tour of the harbor that will take you through most of the harbor and under the lift bridge. Or there is also an iron ore ship docked that you can tour. If you want to venture up the north shore a little bit there is Split Rock Lighthouse and Gooseberry State Park. There is also Glensheen Mansion. As far as restaurants, The only one I can think of is Grandma's. I can't really tell you much about price as I was there about 10 years ago. (I'm 18 now.) When I was there we sat outside at a restaurant (I don't know the name, but it was in Canal Park) and we could watch all the big ships come in under the lift bridge. One word of caution: What ever you do, DON'T FEED THE SEAGULLS! Have a good trip!

Duluth has a nice zoo. Rock skipping is a must do. If you want to drive a bit further north there are great hiking trails around Lutsen. Duluth has your basic restaurants you can find anywhere. I don't know of any place there besides Grandma's that is a Duluth exclusive either. OH, and stop at the Pie place along the way or on your way home (Betty's Pies I think).

Thanks GG! We loooove pie. I googled the GlenSheen and talked to some co-workers and found out the history of the mansion. Does anyone know if they talk about the murders during the tours? I really want to go to the mansion as it looks gorgeous but if they talk about it I don't want to go because my kids will get completely flipped out. I was planning on calling them to ask, but thought I'd ask here first, (save some minutes on my cell phone.)

Duluth for families
First, walk along the piers. You can tour the maritime museum (it's free!) and then stand and wait for a boat to go under the lift bridge-it's fun to watch the enormous boats travel through the harbor.
Second, I am not sure that Glensheen would hold anything exciting for the kids. We toured it once and have no desire to see it again.
Finally, when you first come into Duluth on 35 (before you descend the big hill into Duluth) visit the Tourist information Center and overlook. They have great guides for families etc... It is also a fabulous place for a picnic.
I would also recommend driving to Two Harbors, its along the scenic drive out of Duluth and has some fun shops.
Enjoy Duluth-we go every year and always manage to have a great time (even the kids-who are now teenagers!)
