Thank you, newcastle. I have to take a stroll through CSS, the last time I was there was when the wellness center expanded a few years back. Kudos to St. Scholastica!

as someone who grew up in Duluth for 24 of my 27 years (on the terrible west side) I warn all to disregard this post. While it is most advisable to stay clear of the downtown area when considering a home, there is absolutely nothing wrong with west duluth. Plus you'll stay clear of all of the rich a**holes that reside on the east side (the poster of the original message is most likely one of them).

There is absolutely nothing wrong with living in the west end? Okay, there are some nice areas, but really, what you see of the west end when coming into Duluth is just a dump.

Wow. Since you have lived in that end of town since you were three, I guess there is no convincing you about the attributes of the West End and West Duluth. However, I will let everyone else know who reads this why I like West Duluth.

The city along with various citizen led groups like the Spirit Valley Neighborhood Citizens Group has worked hard to "change the terrible west side" into a better place to live and raise a family. Grand Avenue is in the midst of a transformation with new business opening up, with two new expanded St Luke's clininc and SMDC clinic, and the Denfeld shopping plaza (Grandma's, Blockbuster, etc). along with a new Acme Tools, Arby's, and Walgreens.

Central avenue has entriely new streetscape, new KFC, Erberts and Gerberts, and a cool coffee house like Beaners. I'm down at the end of the city a lot for work and always think it's great. There's a Sammy's Pizza, Mr. D's, a remodeled Menard's, new housing in Ramsey Village and a nice play park near Laura MaCarthur school.

That end of town also has the new skate park, lots of great playing fields at Peterson, the Heritage Hockey Center and indoor athletic fields, a new Boys and Girls club, Spirit Mountain Recreation Center, Western Waterfront Trail, Lake Superior Zoo, amazing homes and views on West Skyline, and Boy Scout Landing.

West Duluth also has the only available industrial land for business to expand in Duluth at the old USX site and Atlas Cement site. Ikonics just expaned on one of those sites and will add to its workforce in Duluth. Other business include SMDC Billing and UnitedHealth (expanded because they are out of space at their Rice Lake Road location), DBU, Granger, and other light industrial.

That part of town also has Denfeld High school (newly remodeled at a cost of over $2 million), Public Schools Stadium, and Wade Stadium where the Duluth Huskies play.

Yeah, I guess you're right. Your part of town sucks. There is too much reinvestment and "new stuff" being built there.

A reread of jesterraceif's post may be in order. I believe he was actually blasting those who were advising people to stay away from the West side of Duluth.

Exactly. Or clean it up.

So many people in this town are such lazy fools. They cant even trim the weeds, or mow their lawns or throw some paint on their house.Im sorry, but all these things take little time and effort and money, so there shouldnt be an excuse. Pick up the trash from your lawn, mow your lawn, and throw some paint on your 100 year old house. Then, people will stop thinking West Duluth and Central Hillside arent trash.

Its sad that 90% of the homes in the City of Duluth would be deemed "Unlivable" in anyone of the suburbs.

i completely agree with arcylic and knke0402, the west for the most part is a dump, due to my past employment ive been in pretty much every apartment in duluth especially in the west end and a good bit of homes too. Morgan Park and Smithville are both horrible, many buildings are falling apart and most of the apartments attract tenants that are not exactly model citizens, most of the violent crimes are commited on the west end as well. Duluth all together is old, most of the building are in poor shape, i could go on and on. I'll be happy to be moving OUT of duluth soon.

I have just been offered a job at UW Superior and I would love to hear more about the pros and cons of living in certain neighborhoods in Duluth. I am coming from Davis, California, thus I am used to being able to walk or bike to the grocery store, farmer's market etc. I have only been to Duluth briefly so I would greatly appreciate your ideas!

Well, since you are talking about Duluth and not Superior, WI., I will address Duluth's neighborhoods. If you want to bike to grocery stores and have a relatively flat area to bike, you may want to check out Woodland as it has a traditonal neighborhood feel with a few restaurants, pizza joints and a Pigley Wiggley.

The farmers market is on East 3rd street and 15th Ave East (thereabouts) and is all hilly (maybe that doesn't bother you) and is only open on Saturdays. It's somewhat close to the local Whole Foods Co-op grocery store (not the national chaine).

Another nice area to consider is Chester Park/Kenwood area as it is near UMD and St. Scholastica. There is a higher end grocery store called Mt. Royal Fine Foods and the Kenwood shopping center. Chester Park has a neat ski area, bike trails, and an outdoor concert area close to campus. One end of Hartely Park is nearby too (cross country trails and bike trails).

Check out Lester Park too as it is a nice area to bike and is near grocery stores along with trails, parks, streams, and golf.

The flatest place in Duluth is a neighborhood called Lakeside. It is a typical grid pattern with traditonal nieghborhoods that runs along the lakeshore. Small neighborhood salons, diners, clinics, and a bank and pharmacy or two. Welcome!
