Maple Grove Road right now is ridiculous in the amount of traffic that travels on it. There are always traffic jams. Plus the stop lights on Miller Trunk are from the 80's and need to be replaced... not to mention all of the bumpy roads in the area. This project is going to do so much for the area.... and its going to attract a lot more businesses.

I don't think there are any problems with the stop lights per se, but rather, the timing. It seems like they're always working against me!

Yeah the lights are working against all of us I would say. The problem is that the Maple Grove/Miller Trunk is way overloaded, and same with Haines/Miller Trunk. The lights are just not timed properly for the traffic that is using those intersections now. And new signals would look less dumpy than the ones currently used at some/most of the intersections around the mall.

And to add some clarification to the Target project...

Duluth will be getting the new P2004 design, without the exterior remodel. Once again, this will expand on the consumables/grocery dept and overall update the whole interior design with new lighting, neon lighting along the walls matching the interior designs of Super Targets. Also, new registers (though 4 fewer than there are now, only 18 down from 22 lanes), and more space along the pharmacy to allow better cart flow (a big guest complaint for the past many years). Along with the moving of departments to match the P2004 design, not much will change, but it will be a much nicer and much needed refresher for our Target.

No expansion was ever planned due to the Miller Trunk project, and the impact an expansion would have on the already limited parking situation at Target. Starbucks backed out of the plan (economy?).

Wow. Its nice to hear that they are redoing the interior... But I really wish we would get a remodel of the exterior. I dont understand why Target would spend the money to remodel a store to the P2004 prototype when they have a P2009 prototype that is brand new. It seems like they would want to keep a store as updated as possible. If Target wont update our store to a P2009 prototype, then they really need to invest in a second Target location in Duluth. The current store gets so crowded because so many people shop at it. Its hard to move around on the main walkways because so many people are in the small store. Im sounding very ungrateful, which Im not, I am very excited for the remodel, but to me it justs seems like they should go all the way with a store that does as well as ours in a population as big as ours.

They probably assume that residents of Carlton County shop at Target in Duluth and those in Douglas county can be served by the Target over in Superior. I have no idea if there is a target on the range somewhere. Is there?

A great place for a new Target would be in the Esko business park. Nice space and right off the freeway.

But still they have the Duluth, Hermantown, Proctor, Two Harbors and the all of the lake areas to serve. Thats over 100,000 people. But we still have one Target. Most people dont get over to the Superior one from Duluth... but then you also have to take in account how many Wisconsin people shop over in Duluth in the Miller Hill Mall area and most of them shop at Target too because its right there. So in reality we are serving a huge population. I still think they should build a Super Target on Garfield Avenue where they originally planned to build. But I still am baffled why Target would spend the money to put a dated prototype in our store... not the most current. It just doesnt make sense to me. That means that they are going to have to remodel again in a few years where as if they put in the most current they could probably go for atleast five or six years without remodeling.

Default How Much Ya Wanna Bet?

There have long been rumors that Target wanted to build in the Cloquet area to capture the MSP people traveling to the range and up the north shore. What a better place to stop to pick up what you need for your weekend, vacation, whatever. So, I will betcha that Target builds a super target in Cloquet near Cabellas. There is already (I heard) plans for a Lowes in the same area as Cabellas at Hwy 33 and 35W. Just my opinion, but Cloquet would draw from Floodwood, McGregor, points south and north. The Super Walmart in Cloquet is always crammed to the rafters with shoppers. People are moving out of Duluth because of various reasons which you are all well aware of. Face it, Duluth is going to be a "service oriented" City geared toward tourists. It's not business friendly and it's their own fault. I love it that John Fedo put the deal together for the site in Cloquet for Cabellas. I'll bet he was saying "take that Duluth".

Wait Cabelas signed on for Cloquet? Is it in the 750,000 square foot retail development? Because if they did I know that Lowes was wanting to open in there and that if those two did Super Target was going to being looking at locating there. When did all this happen?! Wow.... I need to brush up on my researching skills

EXCITING NEWS!!! I was searching on the internet to find more about "Superior Crossings" the retail development being built in Cloquet and not only did I find a site plan and detailed plans for the development but I also stumbled across something else. A 250,000+ SQUARE FOOT RETAIL DEVELOPMENT BEING BUILT IN HERMANTOWN! This was so random to stumble across and I cant even believe this happening. It is called "Hermantown Square" and it is located on the corner of Highway 53 and Lavaque Road. It features a huge 154,000 square foot general mechandise retailer... can we guess who most likely will be looking at the site (WALMART SUPERCENTER)! On the site plan the General Merchandise Retailer spot is the exact design of Walmart Super Center. But next to the large big box is three spots, one 21,000 square feet, one 30,000 square foot space and a 23,000 square foot space and also has one pad site for sale (Most likely for a fast food retailer). This is so exciting! RE-COR who is developing this must plan on this being a big development because they also have another 20 acres for sale behind this development. Re-Cor plans on opening this development in the Spring OR Summer of 2009. Now I know most people are probably saying is this still going to happen because that is really soon that it would have to open. But it must be current because this was just put on their website. I always check Re-Cor's website and it has never been on there before, just like Superior Crossing hasnt been. They both must have been put on in the last week. Now here is some information on Superior Crossings. First of all the site is 650,000 square feet and is absolutely gigantic! Ok so this site has a ton of restaurants, 4 sit down, 3 fast food, a bank, a gas station, and so much more. The inline retail space totals over a 100,000 square feet. Ok here we go on the major anchors of the development. The General Merchandise retailer is 187,334 square feet and is in the exact design of a Super Target. How many square feet are normal Super Targets? 186,000 SQUARE FEET!!! It is Super Target with no doubt. Then there is an 82,000 square foot Outdoor Retail Sales Anchor in the exact Design of a Cabelas! Then there is a a 116,000 square foot Home Improvement tenant with a 30,000 square foot garden center. I looked online at both Home Depot and Lowes and found an article stating that that 117,000 square feet and 30,000 square foot garden center are the normal sizes for a LOWE'S STORE! Then at the site there is a Jr Anchor that is 88,400 square feet. What could it be? Well it is designed identically to a KOHL'S STORE! Now you might be saying well the site plan may look like one but that doesnt mean it is. Well Kohls stores also only go in 88,248 SQUARE FOOT SPACES! So it has to be a Kohl's Plus the site plan shows the exact special design a Kohls store only has! And finally next to Kohls there is another store, a 53,000 square foot Sporting Goods store... the site plan clearly shows the design of a major chain sporting goods store. DICKS SPORTING GOODS. The site plan has the exact design of their store. Plus their average locations are between 50,000 and 55,000 square feet! Look for Superior Crossings to open in Spring/Summer 2010! I am so excited! This is going to do so much for both areas. Let me know your thoughts! Here are the site plans of each center!
